Police have described an horrific scene that took place Sunday night in Oklahoma in which a seemingly loving husband and father killed his wife, and three of their sons before turning the gun on himself, leaving his other son, 10, to discover the bodies.

The terrifying crime left neighbors in a quiet Oklahoma City suburb shocked as some described the perpetrator, Jonathon Candy, 42, as 'goofy' while investigators still search for answers.

The victims has been named as Jonathon's wife, Lindsay, 39, and sons, Dylan, 18, Ethan, 14 and Lucas, 10.

On Monday morning, '(the boy) woke up and discovered what had happened,' said Sgt. Gary Knight, describing the scene as 'carnage.'

Knight said that after a fight with his wife, Jonathon armed himself with a gun and shot her before stalking other members of his family throughout the home, systematically shooting them dead. There was no evidence of a struggle.

The bodies of the victims' were found in different areas of the home, with police saying they found two bodies upstairs, and two others downstairs. One of the children had been shot in bed.

'Make no mistake about it, what happened in that residence was nothing short of a massacre,' Knight said.

Neighbor Michael Burcham, 68, told The Oklahoman that Jonathon previously confided in him that he struggled with depression.

Burcham also said that Jonathon would regularly help him to fix his car or lawnmower and that the pair would regularly fly their drones together. He said that Jonathon helped another neighbor around his house with handy work.

Burcham said that as far as he knew there were no issues between the suspect and his wife. The neighbor disclosed that he knew Jonathon kept guns in the home and stored up food.

'All day we just couldn't imagine. He must have really been having a hard time,' Burcham said.

Their home is located within the Oklahoma City limits, two of the children, Ethan Lucas, were students in the local Mustang Public School district. Dylan Candy graduated high school in the district in 2023.

Knight said investigators believe the shooting began after an argument between the parents late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

Knight said it is not known why the fourth child was spared or a motive for the shootings.

He said police had no previous contact with the family, had not previously been called to their home and that there was no history of domestic violence in the family.

Knight said the 10-year-old was placed in the custody of relatives and was physically unharmed.

Knight said the boy told investigators that he slept through the sound of the gunfire, and that there is no reason to doubt him.

'He called 911 and said he had just woke up and found the bodies,' Knight said. 'The door (to his room) was closed and there was a box fan running' that would also muffle the sound.

'There is no indication he didn't sleep through it,' Knight said.

Mustang superintendent Charles Bradley wrote in a statement to parents: 'We are shocked, and our hearts are broken; this tragedy simply defies understanding.

'While this has been a very difficult year for the MPS Family, both students and adults may struggle with managing their feelings and reactions to this news.

'Our Crisis Response Team has been present at schools today and will continue to be in place moving forward for as long as they are needed.

Candy family statement

A member of the Candy family issued a brief statement to the media:

'Our entire family has been left shattered and confused with so many questions we won’t ever have answers to.

Aside from these events, his children and wife were his entire life. I simply can’t fathom what went on but please, hug your family tight.

It’s going to be a very long healing process for everyone affected.'

Neighbor Brian Graham told KFOR: 'Nobody expected it, it was very shocking. You know, like I said, they were a great family.

'They were good friends of ours. They would come down all the time and we kind of had hangouts together.

'We’re really going to miss them. We really wish this wouldn’t have happened,' he added.

Ethan's baseball coach TJ Armstrong paid tribute to him and his family calling them 'beautiful' when speaking to 9News. 'I hugged every one of these kids yesterday,' Armstrong added.

According to his LinkedIn page, Jonathon worked as a video engineer for a company named Cox Media. Police later revealed that he worked part-time at the Paycom Center, home of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

An official with the team confirmed he worked as a 'game night engineer.''

'There are no words to express how heartbroken I am to learn that this unthinkable scene is the beloved Candy family,' a family friend wrote on Facebook.

'So senseless. The few times I met them seemed like your typical all American family,' a commenter wrote.

The family lived in a subdivision named Czech Hall Estates in Yukon, Oklahoma, where homes ranged from $211,000 to $365,000.

In 2022, the couple was interviewed as part of the series, Discover Oklahoma, which saw them discuss their favorite bakery and deli stores in Yukon.

'I come here twice a week in the morning just for their breakfast burritos, which are by far anything better than you can get around here… I love carrot cake. I don’t eat a lot of sweets even with my last name. But I love the carrot cake,' Jonathon said of one establishment.
