Dramatic video has emerged of the moment a man attempted to board an international flight through the cargo hold after running onto the tarmac.

The incident occurred at Sydney Airport around 3pm on Friday when the man reportedly made his way through immigration controls onto the tarmac and attempted to board a Sri Lankan Airlines jet.

Australian Federal Police (AFP officers were seen arresting the man, dressed in a red and white shirt, as he clung to the bars of a loading platform by the aircraft's open cargo door.

Airline staff tried to prise the man's arms free from the bars as AFP officers pulled on his legs, eventually dragging him to the ground while he continued to scream.

Witnesses said the man ran through the immigration control area and out onto the airport's apron as he was pursued by AFP officers, the Daily Telegraph reported.

It's believed the man was experiencing a mental health issue.

A spokesperson for the AFP said the man allegedly ran through the immigration screening area before gaining access to 'restricted areas'.

'AFP officers intercepted the man on the apron,' the spokesperson said.

'The man was transferred to hospital for assessment, where he remains.'

The man has received a court attendance notice for breach of airside areas and has been banned from the airport for 12 months.
