Everyone has heard the old saying 'marry at haste, repent at leisure', and it seems these celebrity couple have taken it very seriously.

While there is no prescribed time an engagement should last, after popping the question, in the UK, the average length of time until the wedding is 20 months.

This gives the happy couple a good amount of time to plan their big day without having to rush, while not dragging out the engagement.

However, not everyone sticks to this timeframe, with some couples taking much longer to get around to their nuptials.

Here, FEMAIL reveals some of the longest celebrity engagements...

When it comes to long celebrity engagements, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham may be the first names that come to mind.

The model and the actor, who are both from London, started dating in 2009, after they met each other at a party.

According to model Rosie, the couple shared instant chemistry, despite their 20-year age gap (he is two decades older than her).

In fact, speaking with Glamour in 2013, Rosie said the difference in age was one of the things she found attractive in her partner.

She revealed: 'His knowledge and strength are really inspiring and attractive, and that can come with a man who's had a bit of time.

'We have a connection that has nothing to do with age. Work comes and goes, but if you have someone at home who thinks you're the greatest person in the world, that keeps you going.'

It wasn't until 2016 that the couple got engaged - but despite that being the best part of a decade ago, they have yet to tie the knot.

It was at the Golden Globes that year that fans noticed the model sporting a diamond on her engagement finger from celebrity jeweller Neil Lane.

The couple soon confirmed they were set to wed, confirming to People the next day that he had popped the question.

However, despite the intervening eight years, they have not yet got hitched, although they have hit some important milestones together.

For example, they are parents to two children: two children, son Jack born in June 2017, and daughter Isabella James in February 2022.

However, while the couple seem happier than ever with their small family, they have yet to wed, making theirs one of the longest celebrity engagements.

In September 2023, a source close to the couple said have no plans to marry because they 'don't want to fix what isn't broken'.

The insider told the MailOnline: 'Jason might be 20 years older than Rosie but they are on the same page with each other in so many aspects of their lives,' the source told DailyMail.com.

'Their love for each other, and their children is incredibly reassuring and something their friends look up to.'

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are another couple who appear to be in no rush to walk down the aisle.

The couple, met in 2016, at a Golden Globes afterparty.

Katy opened up about their chance meeting during an episode of American Idol, saying: 'I met my boyfriend over In-N-Out. We were at the Golden Globes and we weren't together.

'So I had my security guard grab 10 In-N-Outs and all of a sudden I see my boyfriend's hand - he wasn't even sitting at our table - he just swoops in and he grabs it and I was like, "Hey that's my burger!".'

However, despite the less than romantic first meeting, their relationship quickly flourished.

Katy reportedly met Orlando's five-year-old son (from his first marriage to Miranda Kerr) Flynn, not long after they met.

They went public with their partnership that Summer, sharing a photo on Instagram, during the Cannes Film Festival.

In February 2017, the couple revealed they had broken up, releasing a statement that said: 'Before rumours or falsifications get out of hand, we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time.'

However, the couple were said to have remained friends, and by 2018, they had reunited as a couple.

They got engaged after Orlando popped the question on Valentine's Day in 2019.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Katy revealed how elaborate the proposal was, saying: 'It was Valentine's Day...we went to dinner and I thought we were going to go see some art after dinner but we pulled up to a helicopter.'

She added: 'We landed on a rooftop [in LA]. My whole family was there, and all my friends. He did so well.'

The couple planned to wed in early Summer in Japan in 2020. However, due to the Covid pandemic, were forced to cancel their plans.

They announced the birth of their daughter Daisy Dove Bloom later that Summer.

However, despite the couple continuing to share sweet images of their daughter, and happy anecdotes about their relationship, they have yet to reschedule their nuptials.

Despite enjoying a relationship since 2017, when footballer Cristiano met girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez working in a Gucci store, the couple have yet to tie the knot.

She has spoken about their relationship on her Netflix show I Am Georgina, branding him 'Prince Charming'.

In it, the WAG said: '[I am] the girlfriend of the most followed man.

'Cristiano is great, he's a very normal guy. I dreamed of having a Prince Charming by my side and now I have him.'

However, their fairytale union has not yet resulted in a big, white wedding.

Their partnership had an unlikely beginning, when the couple met when Georgina was working as a sales assistant in a Gucci shop after Cristiano had ended his five-year union with model Irina Shayk

'My coworkers went crazy. They get there on the bus, and I would leave in a Bugatti. I mean, people couldn't believe it.'

After making their first public appearance  (with Cristiano's young son from a previous relationship, Cristiano Jr.,) in early 2017, the couple became 'Instagram official' that Summer.

Not long after, Cristiano welcomed his twins, who were born by surrogate, Eva and Mateo.

Around a year later, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together, with Georgina debuting her bump on the cover of the August issue of ¡HOLA!.

She said: 'I'm very family oriented, I love kids, nature and animals.

'I like to surround myself with those who inspire me to be a better person every day and who have good energy.'

The couple welcomed their daughter Alana Martina in November 2018.

Engagement rumours were sparked that month, after Georgina was spotted wearing a diamond on her engagement finger, in a since deleted Instagram Story, though the couple did not respond to the speculation.

The couple were hit by tragedy in April 2022, after the couple had twins - a boy and a girl - but lost their baby boy Angel.

They have been public about their grief, with Georgina describing Angel's death as the 'worst moment of her life', but have also spoken about their happiness at the birth of their daughter Esmerelda.

As of now, the couple have not publicly made any plans to wed.

Despite saying 'yes' to the big question over the festive period in 2016, TV presenter Lisa Snowden, 51, has yet to tie the knot with her beau entrepreneur George Smart, 43.

The former model announced the engagement on Instagram, showing off a photo of her enviable diamond.

According to Lisa, the couple had a somewhat rocky start to their relationship. After they met, around 10 years ago, they initially had a short fling.

Speaking on panel show Loose Women about the pairing in 2022, Lisa revealed that not long after they enjoyed their 'mini fling', she 'turned into a monster', as she became peri menopausal, causing depression.

According to Lisa: 'I'd be horrible to him, I'd want to fight with him.

'It breaks my heart that women suffer in silence.'

However, despite the less-than-ideal start, the couple stayed together, eventually getting engaged.

Despite her excitement at George's proposal however, Lisa has admitted that the pair may never actually tie the knot, as she is not keen on the 'hoo haa' that surrounds weddings.

She told the Loose Women: 'We're really happy but I'm not sure whether we're actually going to get married... I'm not sure I want a big hoo-ha!'

After facing some criticism from fans over her seven-year engagement, Lisa spoke to the Express about why she has yet to wed her fiance.

Lisa previously gushed over George who she branded her 'soulmate', who 'took so long' to meet after a string of failed romances - including a relationship with George Clooney

She said: 'It's so strange, it [the engagement] feels like yesterday and feels like we've been together forever.

'It's such a nice feeling, like we're so content. And I think some people are baffled, like, "seven years, how comes you've never got married?".'

She added that the couple have had conversations about their wedding day, but are simply in no rush to say 'I do.'

Lisa also explained that they are 'kind of in the mindset' of being so happy, that if it isn't broken, then it doesn't need fixing.

In addition, according to the former model, the pair are unsure as to what type of wedding they'd like - something big, or have a smaller 'do and spend the money on 'doing some more floors at home'.

However, despite the delay in their nuptials, she gushed over George who she branded her 'soulmate', who 'took so long' to meet after a string of failed romances - including a relationship with George Clooney.

The couple are parents to son Roman, three, and daughter Lilah, 19-months, and Ryan has joked that they will tie the knot once they have finished building their family.

He joked: 'She turned up in a wedding outfit to Dancing On Ice and I said, "Darling this isn't your moment".'
