Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson did not take too kindly to some chirping from New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox and decided to cheap shot him in their Stanley Cup Playoff matchup.

Towards the end of the first period, with New York on the power play, center Vincent Trocheck was able to score a goal that broke a tie to give the Rangers a 2-1 advantage.

As he was skating to celebrate with his teammates, Fox looked in Wilson's direction. It's not clear if he said anything to his Washington counterpart, but regardless, Wilson took exception to something.

He grabbed Fox as he was skating by and delivered a hit with his left hand near Fox's face.

The rest of the Rangers, who were celebrating behind the goal, skated over to help their teammate and a scrum ensued.

Wilson still had his arm around Fox as the Rangers tried prying the enforcer off their star defenseman.

Eventually the two were separated - with Fox looking disheveled as he skated away.

Wilson was assessed a two-minute minor for roughing that the home Capitals fans didn't take well.

Eventually, the Caps tied the game with a Hendrix Lapierre goal in the second period.

But the Rangers, who dominated throughout the series, finished off the sweep with goals from Artemi Panarin and Jack Roslovic in the third period.

That won New York the series as they swept Washington four games to none and now await their next opponent in the second round.

The Rangers play the winner of the series between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders. Carolina leads that series three games to one, with game five set for a 7:30ET puck drop on Tuesday night.
