Punches were thrown when a violent brawl broke out between the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers, which saw the benches cleared Tuesday night.

Chaos ensued in the eighth inning when the Rays' Jose Siri grounded out against the Brewers' Abner Uribe, and the pair exchanged tense words.

Despite an umpire standing between them, Uribe swung at Siri, who retaliated by lunging forward and taking several shots at the pitcher.

Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins quickly ran over as both dugouts and bullpens emptied, marking it the third bench-clearing incident for Milwaukee this season.

'I don't know who said something first but I saw them talking to each other somewhat discreetly and then off it went,' Hoskins told reporters.

Uribe claimed the melee began with some 'unnecessary' words from Siri, while the outfielder said the situation was escalated by Uribe's shoulder bump.

The pair were both ejected after the scrum, along with Brewers starter Freddy Peralta and manager Pat Murphy for separate incidents earlier in the game.

'All I can say is I'm just glad nobody got seriously hurt,' Murphy said of the fracas.

'There's a lot of emotion in the game. I think the way the game ended, there was a lot of emotion.'

Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters that Siri suffered a minor injury during the clash.

'He's OK,' Cash said. 'His leg is actually pretty sore, probably won't play (on Wednesday).'

The Brewers defeated the Rays 8-2.
