Ford urgently recalls Maverick pickups amid reports the tail lights can go dark - is YOURS affected?

Ford is recalling nearly 243,000 Maverick small pickup trucks in the US because the tail lights may not illuminate.

A faulty computer module can cause the tail lights to stay dark when they are being driven.

This makes it harder for other motorists following behind to see the trucks - and that increases the risk of a crash.

The recall covers certain pickups from the 2022 through 2024 model years.

Ford says it has no reports of any crashes or injuries due to the problem. Headlights, turn signals and brake lights will still work.

Documents posted Wednesday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website say dealers will update software to fix the problem at no cost to owners.

The report says the fault can 'cause reduced visibility to other drivers in dark conditions, increasing the risk of a collision.'

While the 242,669 Mavericks are from the 2022 to 2024 model years, they were manufactured between February 2021 and March of this year, according to the recall report.

Notification letters will be mailed starting May 20 telling drivers what they need to do - which is simply contacting a local dealer and booking an appintment to take their Maverick in.

In the meantime, owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and Ford's number for this recall is 24S24.

It comes after Ford was forced to recall more than 40,000 small SUVs amidst fears of gas leaks which have already caused under-hood fires.

The recall covered certain Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years as well as Escape SUVs from 2022. All 42,652 have 1.5-liter engines.

In documents filed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford said the fuel injectors can leak causing gas to leak into ignition sources and possibly spark fires.
