A Montana family who heard the tragic tale of Ashley Vigil - the severely disabled woman who was raped repeatedly by her stepfather before dying - have spoken out about their own horrifying experience with Brian Urban, the now-convicted rapist.

Urban, 51, was recently convicted in Utah for five counts of rape and forcible sexual abuse - he was given the maximum sentence for his crimes, which were exacted against his stepdaughter, Ashley Vigil.

Vigil died in March of this year, after Urban's arrest, but before his April sentencing.

On the day of his sentencing, dozens rallied outside of the courthouse in support of Ashley, including Paula S., from Montana, who said she met Urban back in the 90s.

Now, she wonders if Ashley's fate could have been avoided had her family's own cries for help been heard.

According to local outlet 2KUTV, Paula - who wished to keep her last name anonymous - said she and Urban 'moved to Iowa in '96, and then we got married that following spring.'

She and Urban then had a son together, Kaeden, in addition to her two daughters, Kyrsten and Alysa.

The family moved states several times, and as years passed, the dynamic of the group shifted considerably.

Paula said Urban 'didn't like the way I was raising the kids,' and would abuse her verbally, at first. 'He was very controlling.'

Then, the alleged abuse turned physical.

'He would push me,' she recalled. 'The last time he got up behind me, and he put his arm around my neck, and the other one around my head. He said he could have snapped my neck, and I just said do it.

'Put me out of my misery. I can't do this anymore.'

Years ago, in Wyoming, arrest records show that Urban was convicted of strangulation and sentenced to three years of probation.

Eventually, both of Paula's daughters would come forward to accuse Brian of sexually assaulting them.

Kyrsten recalled Urban touching her breasts, and said, 'There was an occasion where I woke up with Brian in between my legs ... It didn't stop until I left home at 19.'

Alysa recalled similarly horrifying incidents that plagued her childhood.

'Brian a muddied a lot of water our entire childhood,' she said.

Paula said she was unaware of what happened to her daughters until they informed her as adults.

'He played all three of us,' said Kyrsten.

'The impression that I had was if it was happening to me, it wasn’t happening to her. He’d be like, 'well I’ll hurt your mom if you say anything.''

Police in Wyoming have confirmed that both Alysa and Kyrsten reported what happened to them in their childhoods. Kyrsten in 2014 and Alysa in 2017.

Alysa said she came forward to authorities after sharing her family's dark history with her husband.

'Months and months and months of 'we can’t get in contact with Mr. Urban, Mr. Urban won’t answer his phone, and Mr. Urban won’t answer the door when we came to the house,'' she described as the police process that followed her report.

'If things had been handled properly, this would have never happened to Ashley and her family,' said Kyrsten.

Authorities say they investigated both claims and sent them to prosecutors, who then declined to prosecute the now-convicted rapist.

After Urban left Paula S. and her family in 2014, he met Paula Vigil and her daughter Ashley in Utah.

Urban would then begin raping his stepdaughter Ashley for years until he was finally found out after being caught on a nanny cam by Paula V.

'He will sit in prison, knowing that no one cares about him,' said Alysa outside the courthouse.

Ahead of her untimely passing, Ashley Vigil, 31, had a rare disorder called Rett syndrome, a genetic mutation that affects brain development in fewer than 1,000 people in the US, almost exclusively girls.

It was revealed that she was repeatedly raped by Urban after her mother installed cameras in the bedroom to monitor her seizures, which had ramped up in frequency as a result of her deteriorating condition.

Urban pleaded guilty to five felony charges and was sentenced in early April.

Paula believes that the seizures were a result of Ashley's body screaming for help.

'Her body was seizing, and she was crying for help in the only way she could,' Paula said. 'If not for those cameras, I would have never known, and I would have never had proof.'
