India is in uproar after an ally of the nation's prime minister fled to Germany amid allegations he raped or sexually assaulted up to 400 women while filming himself.

Prajwal Revanna, 33, the grandson of a former prime minister of India, is also alleged to have used the 2,800 videos of the assaults to blackmail his victims. Police are currently probing the allegations.

Revanna, whose grandfather is HD Deve Gowda, India's prime minister for nine months in 1996, runs the Janata Dal (Secular) or JDS, party which is politically allied with current PM Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state of Karnataka, south India.

The allegations of abuse were made public last week, after roughly 2,000 USB sticks that held videos of Revanna's alleged attacks were left on buses, trains and park benches across Karnataka as the state's 28 constituencies are holding its elections.

One alleged victim, a former councillor in Bangalore, told local media that Revanna, who was standing for a seat in a seat in the city of Hassan before he fled India, repeatedly raped her.

'He asked me to remove my clothes and I denied and said I would scream for help. He then threatened me, saying that he was carrying a gun.

'He threatened to leak the video to the public if I revealed it to anyone. He used to video call me and ask me to strip. He also raped me several times.'

The leaker is believed to have been a former aide and driver to Revanna, who reportedly used a diplomatic passport to escape India.

Modi himself has been accused of doing nothing to punish Revanna despite knowing about the allegations.

Rahul Gandhi, a member of the opposition party, the Indian National Congress, said that BJP officials were aware of the allegations before they were made public, telling a rally in Karnataka: 'This is not a sex scandal but a mass rape. The prime minister has supported a mass rapist.

'All BJP leaders knew that Prajwal Revanna is a mass rapist and they still allied with him and fielded him in the polls.'

Though Revanna hasn't directly refuted the allegations, having fled the country after a former maid in his home spoke to police to allege he had repeatedly raped her, he himself filed a police complaint claiming the videos being shared around to 'tarnish his image and poison voters’ minds' were 'doctored.'

The maid, who has not been named, also alleged that Revanna's father, HD Revanna, sexually assaulted her at a farmhouse. He has since been arrested over the charges.

Revanna's party has suspended him as police investigate the allegations, while Modi's party, the BJP, has distanced itself from him.

It said: 'We have nothing to do with the videos and neither do we have any comments to make.'

MailOnline has contacted the Germany Embassy in London for comment.
