A Kansas man charged with killing his hospitalized wife admitted to police that he could not afford her medical bills.
Ronnie Wiggs, a 75-year-old from Independence in Kansas, appeared in court on Monday on a second-degree murder charge, where he was referred to the public defender's office. Bail was set at $250,000.
On Friday, his wife was in Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, where she was getting a new port for her dialysis, when staff responded to a Code Blue as she was unresponsive.
While medical practitioners were able to bring a pulse back, she was considered brain dead, and they made preparations to harvest her organs that day. She officially died on Saturday.
After she was declared brain-dead, Wiggs left the hospital, but confessed to the killing after the woman's son brought him back to see her.

'I did it, I killed her, I choked her', he reportedly said.
After being arrested, Wiggs told detectives that he covered his wife's nose and mouth to keep her from breathing and screaming, adding that he was depressed and wasn't able to deal with the caregiving and the mounting bills from his wife's treatment.
This wasn't the first time Wiggs allegedly tried to kill his wife. He admitted to attempting to kill her while she was at a rehabilitation center, but she woke up and told him not to ever do that again.
He also admitted to trying to kill his wife while she was hospitalized, but said he couldn't as she was hooked up to too many monitors.
Ronnie faces 10 to 30 years behind bars, or may even get life with the possibility of parole.
He is due back in prison on Thursday, where his bail will be reviewed.
