Whoopi Goldberg has given a rare insight into her love life at the age of 68 and admitted that she only indulges in a 'hit and run' when it comes to spending time with someone romantically.

Writing in her new memoir, Bits And Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, And Me, the Sister Act star opens up about her former drug use and also how it took her a 'long time' to figure out that married life wasn't for her after getting divorced three times.

Whoopi was married to her drug counselor, Alvin Martin, from 1973 until 1979, cinematographer David Claessen from 1986 until 1988, and then wed actor Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994, but they got divorced the following year.

In the book, Whoopi admits: 'It took me a long time to figure out it was also cheaper to "just have a party instead." At this age, I don't even bother with a party, who needs the aggravation? It's all about a "hit and run."'

She continues: 'And I have them only with someone who completely understands that this is only a "hit and run." I don't even want to have to toss empty beer bottles in the recycle bin after somebody hung out too long. I don't need anybody to stick around after that at all.'

Referring to her three weddings, the Oscar winner says: 'I married three times before realizing I was better off being singular full-time.'

In regards to her second marriage to David, Whoopi adds: 'When that marriage went toes up, I thought maybe I just wasn't doing it right.'

She also recalls when her mother, Emma, advised her to 'just have a party instead' after she agreed to wedding number three and admits: 'I should have listened to that sage advice, but I didn't.'

Whoopi very rarely goes into detail about her current love life, but occasionally on The View she will share tidbits and it's certainly no secret that she enjoys living alone with just her cat.

Back in March, she left her cohosts stunned when she admitted that one of her last relationships was with a man 40 years her senior.

Whoopi let her recent romantic rendezvous slip during a heated panel discussion about the backlash over the age difference between Anna Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine in their new film, The Idea of You.

The mother-of-one confessed age is 'no concern' to her when embarking on a relationship, before coyly revealing her multi-decade age difference love affair.

Revealing that she has dated men both younger and older than her, she said: 'I go from here to here,' gesturing an expansive age with her arms.

'Because I'm not, you know... your age is not what's going to get me into your arms,' she continued.

'It's not your age that I'm concerned about. Unless you're under 18 in which case I can't, I can't at all but, you know.'

'A big gap could be problematic,' her cohost, Joy, mused.

'Because when you're like 20 and 40 is good and even 40 and 60, but now 60 and 80 gets a little-,' Joy added, before Whoopi cut in.

'Actually, I just have to say this to you, one of the last relationships I had, he was 40 years older than me,' she revealed.

'40? Is he still alive?' Joy exclaimed, as Whoopi nodded without giving much else away about the mystery man.
