Whoopi Goldberg has revealed why she prefers 'older men' during a rather racy conversation on The View as she discussed the 16-year age gap between the characters in Anne Hathaway's new movie, The Idea of You.

The 68-year-old actor, who wrote in her new memoir that she indulged in what she referred to as 'hit and runs' these days, couldn't resist sharing her thoughts when cohost Joy Behar claimed: 'Women peak older, sexually, and men peak younger.'

'There's an issue I just want to point out, there's some things you have to give to older men, okay? Because they know their way around,' the Sister Act star said on Wednesday, before adding: 'You don't have to explain a lot of stuff, you might have to point stuff out, but you don't have to explain it!'

Joy, 81, jokingly replied: 'But it depends on how old, you might have to give them  Metamucil!' as Whoopi argued: 'I'm just saying that when they're 24, you have to teach a lot more, that's my point.'

The raunchy debate began as the panel discussed new rom-com, The Idea of You, which stars Anne, 41, as well as 29-year-old actor Nicholas Galitzine, and Whoopi couldn't resist comparing it to another film.

'I'm going to preface this story by saying I made this movie 15 years ago... it's called How Stella Got Her Groove Back,' the mother-of-one said, referring to the 1998 rom-com, as a confused Joy asked: 'Is it the same movie?'

'You watch, it's the same movie, except one is black and one is white, okay?' Whoopi fired back before opening up the debate about whether or not movie-goers will see more 'older women with younger men for a change.'

Sara Haines piped up and said: 'I think it's harder to attract a woman beyond that one act of getting your groove back, because I tend to think the wisdom of time is more attractive.

'I tend to think that fantasies go up, not down, because even with 20-somethings, they seem so young to me that I'm like, "They haven't lived a lot".'

Referring to Sara's age of 46, Whoopi joked: 'But you just got here!' as Alyssa Farah Griffin, 34, laughed and said: 'I know, because I'm in the same boat!'

Back in March, the Ghost actor left the panel stunned when she admitted that one of her last relationships was with a man 40 years her senior.

Yet again, the women were discussing The Idea of You when Whoopi confessed age is 'no concern' to her when embarking on a relationship, before coyly revealing her multi-decade-age difference love affair.

'I go from here to here,' she said, gesturing an expansive age with her arms, before adding: 'Because I'm not, you know... your age is not what's going to get me into your arms,' she said.

'It's not your age that I'm concerned about. Unless you're under 18 in which case I can't, I can't at all but, you know.'

'A big gap could be problematic,' Joy mused. 'Because when you're like 20 and 40 is good and even 40 and 60, but now 60 and 80 gets a little...'

Whoopi then cut in and said: 'Actually, I just have to say this to you, one of the last relationships I had, he was 40 years older than me.'

She also decided to gave fans a rare insight into her love life in her new book, Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, And Me, which was released on May 7.

Whoopi, who has been divorced three times, writes in her memoir that it took her a 'long time' to figure out that married life wasn't for her.

'It took me a long time to figure out it was also cheaper to "just have a party instead",' she says. 'At this age, I don't even bother with a party, who needs the aggravation? It's all about a "hit and run".'

She continues: 'And I have them only with someone who completely understands that this is only a "hit and run." I don't even want to have to toss empty beer bottles in the recycle bin after somebody hung out too long. I don't need anybody to stick around after that at all.'

Referring to her three weddings, the Oscar winner says: 'I married three times before realizing I was better off being singular full-time.'

In regards to her second marriage to cinematographer David Claessen, Whoopi adds: 'When that marriage went toes up, I thought maybe I just wasn't doing it right.'

She also recalls when her mother, Emma, advised her to 'just have a party instead' after she agreed to wedding number three and admits: 'I should have listened to that sage advice, but I didn't.'
