Art Jimmerson, a former boxer who fought in the first ever UFC event, has died at age 61.

His family announced his death on social media on Thursday and confirmed his passing in Los Angeles on Wednesday in a statement to DailyMail.com.

Jimmerson famously only wore one glove when he fought and spoke to Mail Sport back in November for the 30-year anniversary of UFC's first ever event, staged in November 1993.

Jimmerson was beaten on the night, losing on Nov. 12 1993 to Royce Gracie. Gracie took Jimmerson down in 2 minutes and 18 seconds for the first submission in UFC history.

Up to the time of his death, Jimmerson trained fighters and has his own non-profit: ‘The One Glove Foundation’. He said to Mail Sport he was offered a stake in the UFC, now worth an estimated $12billion, but opted instead for $20,000 up front.

‘We thought it was so barbaric and crazy… we thought we had it good,’ he said.

‘My manager was a lawyer and he said: “Take the money and run – this thing isn’t going anywhere.”'

Recently, he bumped into Conor McGregor at a Target in California.

Jimmerson said to the Mail about the encounter: 'Usually, when I see a guy with cauliflower ears, I know he’s a fighter.

'I see a guy with cauliflower ears, I go to approach him but his bodyguard says: “Back up, man…”’ Guess who it was? Conor McGregor,’ he recalled. So? ‘I gave him my card and he said: “Art Jimmerson! Oh my goodness! Can I get a picture?’

His family said on Facebook on Thursday: 'It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Art Jimmerson.

'Art was known for his love of God, family and boxing. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

'A funeral service to celebrate Art's life will be announced. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Please keep Art and his family in your thoughts and prayers.'
