A hotel owner has died in Brazil as a result of complications she experienced from plastic surgery.
Fábia Portilho underwent a mammoplasty and liposuction at Unique Hospital Hospital in Goiânia on Saturday and died from pulmonary fatty thromboembolism and obstructive shock, her family said.
The 52-year-old was released from the hospital Sunday, according to a Civil Police report. She was admitted to the medical facility on Tuesday after complaining of discomfort on her abdomen and died hours later.
Her family is now accusing the hospital and the surgeon, Dr. Nelson Fernandes, of medical malpractice.
'She was hospitalized and had blood tests done. The family asked for a CT scan, but doctors said she was anemic and didn't need a CT scan,' Portilho's cousin, Mariana Batista, told Brazilian news outlet G1.

Portilho had plastic surgery at a hospital in Goiânia, Brazil on Saturday and returned the following day because she was experiencing abdominal pain
Doctors who were on shift as well as Fernandes did not place a request for X-rays while she sat at the hospital crying in agony.
'She just took the blood bags, and when the shift changed, the doctor saw it was a serious infection and said Fábia needed an Intensive Care Unit,' Batista said.
Doctors recommended that Portilho be transferred to another hospital where she could receive proper care, but her family had her moved to a medical facility they were more comfortable with.
'She arrived at the hospital in shock and received excellent care, however, her lungs were already compromised by an embolism and septicemia,' Batista said.
Brazilian authorities are investigating Portilho's death
Portilho's family has said they are holding the hospital liable for her death because it took them more than 10 hours until they decided she had to be transferred to another facility

The family has said they are holding the hospital liable for Portilho's death because it took them more than 10 hours until they decided she had to be transferred to another facility.
'The doctor didn't accompany Fábia to the other hospital,' Batista said.
Unique Hospital said in a statement that it informed the family that Portilho needed to be 'stabilized' before proceeding with the transfer.
'The hospital advised relatives not to transfer her to another unit due to the patient's unstable condition. However, the family decided to transfer, arguing that there was a family doctor working in another institution,' the family said. 'To do this, they hired ambulance services, even though they were expendable.

The surgeon who performed the mammoplasty and liposuction on Portilho said that she 'did not express any complaints at her post-operative return appointment'

The hospital added that reviewed the 'risks involved' and warned the Portilho's family to wait until her condition improved.
'The critical condition was communicated to relatives, explaining the risks involved and the need to wait for the patient to stabilize before undergoing a CT scan," the statement said. "Even so, the relatives decided to proceed with the transfer, taking full responsibility for the decision."
In a statement, Dr. Fernandes revealed that Portilho didn't report report any issues following the two surgeries.
'The patient did not express any complaints at her post-operative return appointment, and her recovery was proceeding as expected,' he said. 'On Tuesday, however, the patient attended the hospital, presenting complaints that were immediately investigated. However, despite the instability presented, the family chose to transfer to another hospital.'
Dr. Fernandes added that he continued to monitor Portilho's health.
'I emphasize that, at no time, did I stop providing assistance to the patient, always following the appropriate protocols and medical practices recommended by the Regional Council of Medicine and the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery,' he said.
'Detailed information about the patient's medical records cannot be shared publicly, due to medical confidentiality and the General Personal Data Protection Law, but I am available to the family for any clarifications,' he indicated.
'Valuing the health and recovery of my patients is an absolute priority in my medical work, and Mrs. Fábia's death saddens me deeply.'
