Queen Mary and King Frederik may be gearing up to 'celebrate' 20 years of marriage on Tuesday, but some are claiming their famed 'fairytale romance' is over.

The couple, who met at Sydney pub The Slip Inn during the 2000 Olympics, are known for their subtle yet endearing displays of affection at public events.

But, according to body language and vocal intelligence expert, Dr Louise Mahler, their recent 'loving glances', linked arms and broad smiles are 'all for show'.

She believes they have been inauthentic with their affection since photographs of the King in Madrid with glamorous socialite Genoveva Casanova went viral - triggering rumours of an affair.

However, Dr Mahler claims their relationship will endure thanks to one green flag: They both want to be King and Queen, and they want to do so together.

'They are not showing any signs of being a couple [romantically],' she said.

Dr Mahler claims Queen Mary is blocking King Frederik out throughout a recent interview, their first as monarchs, with folded hands and crossed legs. Her head is also tilted away from him quite often.

'She is in control. He is sulking and he needs to grow up,' she said.

Heavily-scripted appearances, including the awkward interview on Denmark's TV 2 and their first tour through Scandinavia as leaders aid in proving her point.

During the televised interview King Frederik glances his wife and smiles - though Dr Mahler claims the glances were 'far too short to be authentic'.

'He doesn't even look at her long enough for his eyes to focus,' she said.

Photos of the couple at royal engagements may show them walking arm in arm - but their 'affectionate displays' are merely formulated for the crowd, Dr Mahler says.

'It can be that after so many years, this is understandable, but given previous tactile behaviour and the rumours before the coronation, one senses a challenge in their relationship,' she said.

In one photo, uploaded to Instagram by the palace, the couple smile arm in arm for the crowd - but King Frederik's hands are clenched into fists

'There are signs of heads facing different directions, arms blocking contact from each other and a spatial distance of as much as possible,' she said.

Dr Mahler believes he has 'checked out' completely while Mary's behaviour has simply been 'protective' since the family was embroiled in the embarrassing scandal last November.

But there is hope for the pair, even if it's not in a traditionally intimate sense.

'The good news is, here are two people totally committed to their role (as King and Queen), and playing the role as a couple,' she said.

'They are together and perhaps that's all that matters to the nation,' she said.
