Toronto FC and New York City FC's rivalry day showdown ended with players and staff brawling on the field.

The teams traded blows for 90 minutes and some change as NYCFC scraped a 3-2 win north of the border. However, the action did not end at the final whistle at BMO Field.

A verbal exchange from the heated game led to members of both clubs trading shoves and tugging kits in a moshpit of blue and grey jerseys.

At the center of the fracas, former NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson pointed a finger at defender Strahinja Tanasijević before aggressively pushing and pursuing the Yugoslavian.

After teammates swarmed and separated the two, Johnson ran around the crowd, held Tanasijević in a clinch, and seemingly threw a headbutt as NYCFC homegrown player Tayvon Gray tried to break them apart.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the frame, TFC manager John Herdman appears to yell at NYCFC manager Nick Cushing while pushing his chest against the Englishman's shoulder. The managers were quickly separated and kept apart by the chaos among players.

NYCFC opened the scoring with a Santiago Rodriguez penalty in the 23rd minute. Before the break, Malachi Jones doubled their lead with another goal in the 44th.

Toronto's Federico Bernardeschi broke New York's clean sheet when he scored in the 55th. However, Andres Perea found the net for NYCFC in the 77th, moving the prize further away from their rivals.

The dying minutes saw TFC score again, thanks to Raoul Petretta in the 89th. At the ninth minute of stoppage time, Bernardeschi collected his second yellow card as tempers flared between both sides.

The teams remain neck and neck in the Eastern Conference, with Toronto sitting fourth with 19 points. On the other hand, NYCFC sits just below them in fifth place with 17.

The Pigeons have won four of their last five meetings against their rivals.
