A couple who renovated their first home have revealed four reasons why it has been a nightmare.

Olivia and her partner Luke embarked on their first renovation journey over three years ago - but it has not been plain sailing.

The mother-of-one revealed her highs and lows in a video posted on TikTok and explained she still 'wouldn't change' her experience.

Branding social media as 'fake', the content creator detailed the struggles she and her partner faced when up-scaling their first home.

1. Length of time with Contractors

Elaborating on the renovation process, Olivia confessed that she knew making changes to the property would be expensive.

But what the first time buyer failed to take into account was the amount of time contractors take to complete the job.

As a result, Olivia admitted they had to pay a significant amount to re-do work they weren't happy with.

'We underestimated just how long that would take and how much would take and how much would go wrong so ended up having to pay to red-do a lot of it,' she said.

2. Debt

The cost of properties let alone any additional building work is bound to set anyone back a pretty penny.

However Olivia and her partner were left with a 'dark hole of debt' which they are now starting to emerge from.

Explaining how the pair took out credit and debit cards, Olivia penned: 'I hate admitting this but we drowned ourselves in so much debt those first 18 months.;

She divulged that the pair spent more in their monthly outgoings  and had more monthly outgoings then the money we both made combined.

She added: 'Looking back I don't know how our relationship didn't struggle more than it did because we were both so overwhelmed and down.'

3. Very Few House Viewings

Another regret of Olivia's was not going to view the property more before making the final decision to purchase the property.

Noting that they lived a two hours away and properties were quickly being snapped up, Olivia and her partner were keen to get the keys.

'We rushed into this [property] without realising just how much it was falling apart,' she confessed.

Discussing a prior experience in the home, she also added that one of their windows nearly fell out as it emerged it was holding on by the skin of it's teeth thanks to a material that resembled 'blue tack putty'.

Luke was ripping out the bathroom and the window nearly fell out because it was being held back on by some blue tack looking putty.

4. Poor Living Conditions

If Olivia could re-do her renovation journey she would not live in the home during construction during the living conditions.

Divulging that they weren't the 'healthiest', the mother-of-one said she was placed between a rock and a hard place as her parents lived far away and the couple couldn't afford a hotel.

'We ended up living in the house when it didn't even have a boiler for heating and had just been plastered in January,' she said.

Adding that they hadn't purchased any furniture before moving in, Olivia affirmed she wished they had moved in when it was completely.

'We ended up changing our minds for how we wanted the layouts out be but it was too late and too expensive to change,' she added.

Several users flooded to the comment section, sharing how they felt similarly about their own renovation journeys.

'Really feel like social media plays a big part on depression and anxiety. People are becoming so materialistic and forgetting what really matters,' one wrote.

'I needed this because I've felt a failure thank you,' a second quipped.

Another chimed: 'So realistic. I am so happy it worked out for you in the end.'

'[It] can be a money pit but also satisfying once it's completed,' a used penned.
