Medics have reportedly cleared Bronny James to be drafted and play in the NBA, 10 months after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The 19-year-old collapsed during a workout last July and needed treatment to repair a congenital heart defect.

But according to ESPN, the three physicians on the NBA's Fitness to Play Panel have evaluated Bronny and given their approval to his hopes of joining the league.

It means that the 19-year-old can fully take part in this week's pre-draft combine, when players will go through tests, medical examinations, team interviews and scrimmage games.

The combine represents an important opportunity for draft hopefuls to prove their worth to NBA teams and, on Monday, The Athletic reported that James is expected to stay in the draft, rather than return to college.

James - the eldest son of Lakers legend LeBron - is eyeing a spot in the NBA after only one year at USC. He declared for the draft back in April.

After being ruled out for several months following his heart problems, the 19-year-old averaged just 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 19.4 minutes per game for the Trojans.

He has until May 29 to officially decide if he wishes to stay in the draft or return to college. Andy Enfield, Bronny's freshman-year coach at USC, has since taken the helm at SMU and Eric Musselman is now in charge of the Trojans.

In addition to testing the NBA Draft waters, James also put his name into the transfer portal.

It has been a long stated goal of LeBron James, who turns 40 in December, to play with his son in the NBA.

The elder James has not shown many physical signs of slowing down, averaging 25.7 points this past season, good enough for 13th in the NBA.

James has until June to make a decision on next year, which would be his 22nd season in the NBA.

He can either opt into a $51.4million deal, the second year of a $99million contract he signed before this season. Or, James can become a free agent and possibly play for a fourth NBA team.

The combine will be held May 12-19 in Chicago, with the first round of the NBA Draft taking place on June 26 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The second round takes place June 27 from Manhattan.
