White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday insisted that young Americans are on President Joe Biden's side - citing climate change as an example - after a dire battleground survey showed him losing 18 to 29-year-olds to former President Donald Trump

On Monday morning, The New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and Siena College released its latest six-state swing state poll, which showed Trump leading Biden in five of the six states.

Biden's support has diminished among young voters - and also Latino and black voters since 2020, polling found - with Trump beating Biden 46 to 43 percent among the youngest set of voters.

In a six-way race Biden still loses to the presumptive Republican nominee, getting 26 percent to Trump's 30 percent - with independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gobbling up 18 percent of young people, Green Party hopeful Jill Stein receiving 4 percent, Libertarian Lars Mapstead with 1 percent and Cornel West sitting at zero.

Jean-Pierre noted that she was bound by the Hatch Act to talk politics from the podium then added, 'But more broadly, we believe that young Americans support the president's agenda more broadly, right? In an overwhelming way.'

'And the president has stood with young Americans on many of the issues that they care about. Because you said beyond, beyond what's happening in the Middle East,' she told the reporter.

'And so when it comes to climate change, right? That's something that he's been very clear about and has been the most progressive president on that particular issue and he's going to continue to do that,' Jean-Pierre noted.

Just 2 percent of young people rated climate change their top issue across the six key states - Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada and Michigan.

The top issue for young people, the pollsters found, was the economy.

Jean-Pierre said Monday that the White House was on top of that too.

'We understand, as well, that while the economy has been turning around ... we understand that prices are too high and young people, in particular, are feeling that,' she noted.

A silver lining for Biden is the second most important topic for young people is abortion.

The poll found that Americans view the president more favorably on the issue than Trump, whose appointment of three conservative justices to the Supreme Court turned over Roe v. Wade, which gave constitutional protections to the procedure.

Just 4 percent of young people ranked the current war between Israel and Hamas as their top voting issue.

'We understand how painful, this moment, is for them,' Jean-Pierre said, pointing to the situation in Gaza.

For decades, Democrats have had a lock on the youth vote, which makes Monday's numbers incredibly surprising.

In 2020, Biden bested Trump in the voting bloc 59 percent to 33 percent, Pew Research Center said.
