A mum has revealed the one spot people always forget to clean in their homes - and didn't notice it was filthy for over a decade.

The woman, from Western Australia, shared that she never cleaned her television remote.

She purchased her TV 13 years ago, and not once did it occur to her to wipe down the remote.

'Quite possibly 13 years of grime that I've never noticed,' she said, alongside an image of the filthy remote.

She recently scrubbed at the device with a Nutrimetics multi-purpose wipe, and was horrified at the amount of dirt that came out.

Grime was caked over it and had caused several buttons to look discoloured.

Previously white numbers had turned light brown, and a layer of grease covered most of the remote.

The mum's 'before' and 'after' photos served as a reminder to check your remotes at home and make sure they're sanitary.

Bacteria can cling to and multiply on such surfaces, which can lead to illness.

Many shared their thoughts on the forgettable area.

'I never thought to clean these,' one wrote.

'Yep, remotes are one of the grossest thing in people's homes,' a mum said.

'It's the one thing that gets used so much with dirty hands people don’t realise,' another wrote.

A woman shared a simple tip to keep your remote grime-free.

'You can use your remote through a plastic zip lock bag,' one shared. 'We fold it over and tape it at the back to make the bag fit snuggly. It is easier to clean and also stops kids from clicking the battery cover open and shut unnecessarily.'

Others pointed out that a few forgotten spots include your phone, keys, door handles, and your car's steering wheel.
