Video footage captured the moment a speeding Tesla goes airborne at an intersection in Pasadena, California, before colliding into a power pole - killing three young people and leaving three other injured.

The incident occurred on May 11 at around 2:38 am, when police say Tesla Model 3 was going 100mph in a 35mph zone and ran a red light at Sierra Madre Boulevard.

The vehicle narrowly avoided hitting another vehicle before it lost control and smashed into a curb, colliding into a power poll and then a vacant building.

All four passengers, who were not wearing seatbelts, were ejected from the vehicle. Witnesses described the scene as one similar to that of a sci-fi movie, with bodies 'lying around' and the injured begging for help, KTLA 5 reported.

The driver of the vehicle, Moheb Samuel, 22, died at the scene, while his 17-year-old sister, Emily, is currently in critical condition.

'We heard a loud bang,' a witness told KTLA5. 'And then the power kind of flashed and then went off.'

A nearby resident, Geraldine Keams, recalled being awoken by loud music blasting from an 'electric car' driving through the area.

'He heard the sound like maybe they're kids looking for a place to party, or partying in their car or something,' Kearns said to KTLA. 'And it was very heartfelt for us to hear especially that these were young people with their whole lives ahead of them… and for such a tragedy to happen.'
