Manchester City and Arsenal go into the final day of the Premier League season both in contention for the title.

If Manchester City beat Tottenham tonight, they will have a two-point advantage over the Gunners going into Sunday.

Anything less and the ball is in the court of Mikel Arteta's side, who are seeking their first Premier League trophy since 2004.

With Manchester City hosting West Ham and Arsenal welcoming Everton on the final day, there will be a 198-mile difference between the two teams.

So, given either team could lift it, what on earth happens with the Premier League trophy? And the medals? Mail Sport brings the details of the plans behind the final day of the season.

The Premier League is well rehearsed with final-day drama.

Everyone remembers the Sergio Aguero moment of the 2011-12 season that won City their first title.

That was only one of nine occasions that the winners have been decided on the final day.

Jurgen Klopp has missed out a couple of times on the final day with Liverpool, Manchester United lost out to Blackburn in 1994-95 and took that out on Newcastle a year later, while the Red Devils only sealed the league title in their Treble-winning 1998-99 campaign on the last day.

This Sunday will be the 10th time it has happened, so what is the protocol?

Will a crack security team bunker down somewhere in the Midlands and defend a facility with the trophy in it, waiting for the call to helicopter it in the direction of the Etihad or the Emirates?

Will one team store the real trophy ahead of kick-off and another be given a replica?

Well, no.

There will be identical trophies waiting on the last day at both the Etihad and the Emirates

The victorious team will be handed 40 medals, and any player who has played five times or more will be eligible for one

There will be identical Premier League trophies already waiting at each ground, according to a source close to the Premier League.

Additionally, there will be a set of 40 medals at each ground. Any player who has made at least five appearances is eligible to receive one.

Each ground will house identical podiums and fireworks in the vent that they need to set up quickly for a title-winning party.

Once the Premier League trophy has been lifted, it is then that an expert engraver will descend to etch the team's name onto it - not before their triumphant lift.

After winning the trophy, the team gets to keep it for a year while the Premier League will take care of the other - the one that isn't handed out on the final day.

But the time comes eventually for a team to give up their prize, and that's three weeks before the end of the following season, when they have to hand it back... and hope they can be lucky enough to lift it again.

Already the mind games are in full flow, as Arsenal ultras set off fireworks outside Manchester City's team hotel at 2am on Tuesday.

The aim was to distract City's stars ahead of their trip to Tottenham.

The only flaw in the plan? City weren't staying in the hotel at the time because they don't stay away the night before a Premier League game.

Who knows what other twists and turns will follow before one of the teams lifts the trophy on Sunday evening.
