An Instagram-famous chapel in California is being taken apart and rebuilt elsewhere due to worsening landslide damage.
Wayfarers Chapel has seen a steady flow of tourists, weddings and funeral guests since it opened in 1951. However, officials must now dismantle the iconic shrine, saying the deteriorating ground leaves them no choice.
'We are taking immediate action to carefully disassemble the chapel’s historic materials as a necessary step in the preservation of the chapel for generations to come,' executive director Dan Burchett said in a statement Monday.
'Wayfarers is committed to preserving our iconic chapel exactly as it has always been, either on the current site or a similar site close by in Rancho Palos Verdes.'
The coastal city has witnessed several landslides, often driven by heavy rainfall, but the iconic seaside chapel has also faced worsening corrosion due to saline-rich air.

Shifting ground has caused structural damage including shattered windows. Electricity, water and other utilities on-site have been deemed unusable
The decision to deconstruct the chapel came three months after officials announced that the shrine would be shutting its doors
The decision to deconstruct the chapel followed an announcement in February when Wayfarers declared that it would shutter for the time being.
'Effective immediately, we are extremely devastated to announce the closure of Wayfarers Chapel and its surrounding property due to the accelerated land movement in our local area,' read a statement posted to social media.
The outlook has only worsened since then. Windows have cracked and asphalt in the parking lot has split. As of Monday, electricity, water, sewer and gas lines were deemed damaged and unusable by church officials.
The 100-seat glass-walled shrine was constructed over seven decades ago. It was designed by Lloyd Wright, son of prominent architect Frank Lloyd Wright, as a memorial to an 18th-century Swedish philosopher.
Preservation design firm Architectural Resources Group will be taking on the daunting task of disassembling the chapel.
In a news release, Wayfarers officials claimed the structure would not be able to withstand much more damage before it became 'impossible to preserve.'
'It has been determined that the immediate deconstruction of the chapel is the safest and most viable preservation action to take at this time and will prevent further irreparable damage to the chapel’s structure and materials,' officials stated.
Careful preservation will allow the chapel to retain its rich history, as many of the original building materials are no longer attainable.
Preservation design firm Architectural Resources Group is expected to begin the operation next week. Deconstruction alone is projected to cost upwards of $300,000

The total rebuild is anticipated to cost around $20 million. Officials say the chapel cannot sustain much more damage before it becomes 'impossible to preserve'
The chapel has seen several celebrity weddings and appeared as a backdrop in TV shows and music videos. It was designated a National Historical Landmark in 2023
Deconstruction and closing of the campus is expected to cost upwards of $300,000, while the rebuild carries an even heftier price tag - a whopping $20 million. The firm is expected to begin work next week.
The latest report on the historical landslide complex in Rancho Palos Verde, which impacts roughly 700 acres, showed that land movement had further accelerated in March and April.
It was almost twice the movement recorded between January and March, and in some areas, the hillside was sliding up to nine inches per week.
The city made headlines in July 2023 after a landslide collapsed several Spanish-style homes in the Rolling Hills Estates neighborhood. At least 16 people were displaced.
The chapel is nestled amid the redwoods above Abalone Cove. Its scenic location and sweeping views made it one of the most-photographed sites in Southern California.
Couples would shell out thousands of dollars to marry at the highly sought-after destination, which has witnessed many celebrity weddings over the past seven decades.
These include Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay in 1958 and Brian Wilson - of Beach Boys fame - and Melinda Ledbetter in 1995.
It has appeared as a backdrop in television shows like 'The O.C.,' 'Beverly Hills 90210,' 'The Bachelorette' and 'True Detective,' with several music videos also shot on location.
Wayfarers was designated a National Historic Landmark in December, with the National Parks Service deeming it 'an exceptional and unique example of a modern organic religious complex with a significant designed landscape.'
