After announcing that it would be shutting its doors for good, one Ohio Walmart auctioned off its remaining inventory, including flat-screen televisions, laptops and furniture, for a bargain.

The Walmart at 3579 S. High St. in Columbus opted not to renew its lease in a once-bustling strip plaza. Representatives announced the closure in February, claiming the store had failed to 'meet financial expectations'.

Last week, the store offloaded its merchandise through a liquidation auction. Bidding closed the morning of May 10, with some items like laptops going for under $20.

The auction was conducted exclusively through the Grafe Auction website. In addition to their winning bids, buyers were required to shell out an 18 percent online premium and 7.5 percent sales tax.

Among the items offered were cash registers, checkout counters, display racks, security monitors, anti-theft systems and ladders.

There was also a plethora of electronics and technology including tablets and small appliances. Some 55-inch, flat-screen monitors were listed for $85 to $100.

Laptops generally went for $110 to $150, and some for much less. As of May 8, one laptop's high bid was a measly $12.

'This is your chance to acquire high-quality equipment, fixtures, and more at a fraction of the retail cost,' an archived version of the webpage reads.

'Whether you're outfitting a new store, expanding your current business or simply looking for amazing bargains, this auction is not to be missed!'

The South Columbus storefront was among eight locations shuttered this year. All associates at that store were given the option to transfer elsewhere and received severance pay through May 3.

With the company citing financial underperformance each time, it is evident that Walmart is among the chains hardest-hit by the shift to online shopping.

The retail giant closed more than 20 stores in 2023, up from an originally slated 15. In addition to the handful of closures so far in 2024, Walmart announced in April that it would shutter all 51 of its health centers and shut down its entire health division.

'We determined there is not a sustainable business model for us to continue,' the company said in a statement.

In January, the company said it would build or up-size over 150 stores over the next five years. Fourteen new locations are expected to open or begin construction in 2024.

Around 650 locations will be renovated to fit the brand's 'Store of the Future' concept, promising more space, merchandising vignettes and digital touchpoints with additional information about products.

According to Walmart's corporate website, the new facilities will also be designed with sustainability in mind, including more energy-efficient equipment and lighting. The company is also working to develop a coast-to-coast network of electric vehicle charging stations.
