A cardiologist who was on humanitarian mission to provide care to victims of the ravaging flood in the Brazilian southern state of Rio Grande do Sul died of a massive heart attack, his mother confirmed on social media.

Dr. Leandro Medice, 41, joined a group of doctors Sunday before dawn and flew from the southeastern state of Espirito Santo to the Rio Grande do Sul city of São Leopoldo to help residents at a shelter.

Dr. Carlos Cardoso, a dermatologist, told Brazilian news outlet G1 that he asked Medice if he was interested in joining the volunteer mission, especially because of the shortage of doctors who were available because of Mother's Day.

Cardoso said that Medice spent the entire day tending to patients at the crowded shelter.

He recalled that Medice was feeling tired but talkative before they went to sleep on Sunday night. They had scheduled to spend the majority of Monday treating residents before flying back to Vitória at night.

Cardoso noticed that Medice was still asleep on Monday morning and nudged him three times in an attempt to get him to wake up before he noticed that the doctor had died.

'In the morning, I went to wake him up early, but I had difficulty at first, but I just thought he was tired,' Cardoso said. 'Around 6:30 am, I came back and touched his hand. he was a little warm, but as there was a cold wind coming in, I thought it was because of that.

'Fifteen minutes later, I came back and I really thought it was very strange that he hadn't woken up by the time I went to touch him, he was already cold. He had already passed away and I didn't have much time, because at 4am I heard him snoring.'

Medice's husband, João Martins, told the outlet that he had did not have any prior medical issues and was in good health.

'He was very healthy, he always took care of his health,' Martins said. 'He never had any history of problems. I still can't believe what happened. When they told me, I thought it was a joke. He went to help people and this tragedy happened.'

The death of Medice, who spent nine years in the cardiology unit at Evangélico de Vila Velha Hospital, shocked his niece, Amanda Medice.

'Dying is ridiculous. You agreed on what we would have for lunch the following week, you have plans to renovate your house, you are worried about bills, with various ideas for the institute... and out of nowhere, in the morning, you die. Like this???' Amanda Medice wrote on Instagram alongside two photos of herself and her uncle.

Amanda was Leandro's goddaughter and was treated by him as if she was his own daughter.

She was left looking for answers as to who was going to look after the hair transplant clinic he ran with his husband or who would look after the family.

'What about the emails you didn't read? Your wet towel on the clothesline? Your clothes to wash? The clinic to clean? The patients? Our family?' she said. 'You spent more than 10 years studying, becoming a professional … you did physiotherapy, medicine, specialized in cardiology, intensive care, hair transplant … From one moment to the next, everything ended in a heart attack in the middle of the tragedy that you went to help in Rio Grande do Sul.

'Dying is crazy. Forced you to leave the party at the best time, without saying goodbye to anyone, without having a last hug or a last "I love you." Dindo, my love, we were so alike and I never imagined myself writing this to you… I will forever be your daughter.'
