A state home to America's 'climate warriors' has been found to be teeming with pollution.

A new report has shown that six out of the 10 locations with the worst air quality reside in California, which is a result of factories, vehicle emissions, agriculture use, wildfires and the oil and gas facilities.

Bakersfield was found to have the highest levels of fine particle matter, which includes soot, soil dust and sulfates, in air out of any US city.

The contamination is likely a result of its booming oil and gas industry that produces 248 billions of barrels annually - even though California has moves to end its use of fossil fuels.

Visalia and Fresno ranked second and third due to vehicle emissions, intensive agricultural uses and factory emission.

Governor Gavin Newson, who has been called a 'climate crusader,' has committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2045, sparking a movement among residents who are self-proclaimed 'climate warriors.'

The data of the most polluted cities was created by the American Lung Association, which used the most recent air pollution data, compiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for the two most widespread types of pollution—ozone (smog) and particle pollution (PM).

The northern California city of Bakersfield is a hub for energy production, agriculture, and distribution in the state.

Kern County is the most productive oil-producing county and home to Kern Oil that has received more than 170 formal enforcement actions for violated the Clean Air Act since 2015.

The report also showed that there are 14,596 pediatric and 56,417 adult asthma cases in Bakersfield that is home to approximately 916,108 people.

Bakersfield, Visalia and Fresno are located at the drier and hotter southern end of the valley, which already results in poor air quality.

The report noted that the top three pollution sources for the cities are farming, forest management, agricultural waste burning and road dust.

Eugene, Oregon ranked fourth worst in the nation, due to car emissions, wood-burning stoves and diesel engines.

California's Bay Area ranked fifth worst due to transportation emissions, wildfires, and industrial storm water.

Sacramento was deemed the sixth worst in the US as a result of vehicle exhaust and wildfires

And Los Angeles was listed next as a result of the burning of fossil fuels, especially by vehicles, ships, planes and manufacturing, as well as wildfires.

The eight spot was given to Medford Oregon, followed by Phoenix, Arizona and Fairbanks, Arkansas.

California was also found in April to be the largest emitter of a little-known greenhouse gas.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University identified high levels of sulfuryl fluoride, a common pesticide for termites and ants, which accumulates in the atmosphere and contributes to global warming.

The team analyzed more than 15,000 air samples collected between 2015 and 2019 by NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory, finding up to 85 percent of America's emissions of the greenhouse gas comes from The Golden State.

Data showed the US is responsible for 17 percent of the global emissions of sulfuryl fluoride, but 12 percent comes from California.
