Knowing when to make the right career moves can be tricky - and according to a top Google executive, there are strategic ways to climb up the corporate ladder.
Daniel Rizea, who works as a director of engineering at Google, says there are many ways to be successful in your career and it all comes down to knowing what to avoid.
In a piece for Business Insider, Daniel explained how he had leaned on business advice from legendary investor Charlie Munger.
According to Daniel, Charlie's advice was 'surprising, if not simple' as it urged employees to simply avoid doing things that will make you fail.
'Avoiding ruin is better than chasing after fast and easy tricks for success, which usually turn out to be wrong,' Daniel recounted.
He then listed five things that you should never do in order to have a successful and meaningful career.

Being ambitious is important - but Daniel warns there can be a point of being overly ambitious.
According to the Google director, if you are promoted too early on it can lead to underperforming if the person is not experienced enough.
'Getting a promotion when you're not quite ready may negatively impact yourself and your career trajectory,' he warned.
'I have seen many people burn out and quit because they were underperforming at their new level,' he added.
Daniel said many people overestimate how ready they are for more responsibility, suggesting you first picture yourself in a more challenging role tomorrow and seeing how it would make you feel.
'If [the thought of being promoted] surprises you, you are most likely not ready because you don't see yourself performing at that level,' he suggested.
Although you shouldn't oversell your abilities at work, it's also important not to underwork.
'Doing the bare minimum has multiple downsides. It stops your growth, reduces your engagement toward your work and your happiness, and makes you less lucky,' Daniel pointed out.
Daniel warned that completely removing yourself from aspects of your job can lead to individuals missing out on 'career changing projects.'

Daniel reminded people that no matter how talented a person is, you still need to put in the hours.
'Some people waste a lot of time figuring out creative ways or shortcuts and realize they might as well have done the work,' he pointed out.
Daniel says that job-hopping can negatively impact your career, as you won't have enough time to properly grow in the role.
'If you're an individual contributor who wants to advance in a leadership position, you need at least two years to grow this skill set,' he pointed out.
Daniel said it was important to show you can deliver projects and demonstrate good work a few times to build trust within your team.
'If you change your job every year, you'll never develop your leadership skills fully. You'll start multiple times from the same spot but never complete the full cycle,' he said.
Daniel reminded people that it's vital to be trusted in the workplace.
'Trust is essential. It's hard to obtain and easy to lose,' he said.
'When someone new joins a team or organization, the team assesses, consciously or subconsciously, whether the person is competent and trustworthy.'
