A mother whose five-month-old baby son tragically overdosed after she took 'significant' amounts of cocaine before breastfeeding him has been jailed for two years.
Ana Isabel Benítez Jiménez, of Las Palmas, in Gran Canaria, Spain, admitted taking the drugs before feeding her baby and was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
She had originally faced four years in prison, but a plea agreement reduced this to two, Canarian Weekly reports.
At a sentencing on Thursday, Judge Juan Gallego Ortiz of the Criminal Court No 3 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria said her sentence may be suspended if she takes part in a drug rehabilitation programme.
The tragedy happened on December 22, 2020, when Benitez, who claimed to be an occasional cocaine user, took the drug and alcohol in 'significant amounts' with her partner of three months at a house in Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria, in Las Palmas.

According to the prosecution, she handled and cut the cocaine on a table in the house, before taking the drug.
Benitez then 'breached her objective duty of care for the baby' by expressing her breast milk and preparing a bottle for him.
She did this despite having handled and ingested cocaine.
The otherwise well baby fell ill after drinking the milk and died.
A forensic report concluded that the drug entered the child's system through his mother's breast milk.
There was no evidence Benitez's partner was involved in preparing the bottle or had touched the baby after taking cocaine and was not charged with any crime.
