A celebrity chef who appeared on shows such as Iron Chef has been thrown out of his New York City apartment after he allegedly did not pay rent for four years.

Madison Cowan was evicted from his $2,750-a-month, one-bedroom Boerum Hill apartment this week after his landlord Gus Sheha claimed he didn't fork over the cash since January 2020.

Sheha said the cook has allegedly used legal loopholes such as repeatedly appealing eviction orders in order to continue living in the apartment.

'I've never seen anything more absurd in my life. This is why people are getting out of New York. The system is completely broken and purposely set up to punish the landlord.'

'I'm out over $140,000 in rent, but I still have to pay for insurance, taxes, water,' Sheha told the New York Post.

Cowan has received five eviction notices in the last few years.

Last week, marshals reportedly attempted to throw him out but once again were turned away after Cowan filed an appeal.

The once-beloved chef has claimed in civil court that he cannot afford to pay rent since his livelihood was 'seriously impacted by the pandemic' - further worsened by the publicity surrounding his rent dispute.

'I couldn't get a job. It all went away,' he told the judge.

Sheha later said that Cowan has allegedly been boasting about getting advice on how to avoid home eviction from state Attorney General Letitia James.

According to the Post, he and his family have occupied the property since October 2019.

Cowan has been actively involved with former First Lady Michelle Obama's Chefs Move To Schools initiative and catered for jazz legend Lionel Hampton, actors Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson, former NYC Mayor David Dinkins and former President Bill Clinton.

He has been ordered by court to vacate the apartment in the next two weeks.
