A university in Vermont has bestowed an honorary doctorate degree to their campus celebrity - a cat named Max.

Days ahead of their commencement ceremony, Vermont State University's Castleton campus announced it would be awarding Max with an honorary doctorate degree for his friendliness around campus.

A post announcing the feline's doctorate read: 'Max the Cat has been an affectionate member of the Castleton family for years.

'While his adventures may have slowed, Max exemplifies the #CastletonWay and we are honored to have him as a member of VTSU's #firstclass.

'With a resounding purr of approval from the faculty, the Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Cat-leges has bestowed upon Max Dow the prestigious title of Doctor of Litter-ature, complete with all the catnip perks, scratching post privileges, and litter box responsibilities that come with it.'

Max lives in a house with his owners on Seminary Street that leads directly to the main entrance of the campus.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Max's owner Ashley Dow said he's been socializing on campus for the last four years.

'He decided that he would go up on campus, and he just started hanging out with the college students, and they love him,' said Dow.

She said the students are always excited to see Max around campus.

They take selfies with him, pet him as he purrs - and he even joins campus tours with prospective students when they are at the building across from the family's house.

'I don't even know how he knows to go, but he does,' Dow said. 'And then he'll follow them on their tour.'

Dow, who is widely known among students and graduates alike as 'Max's mom,' is often asked about his wellbeing and when they'll see him next on campus.

Max will not be participating in the actual 2024 commencement ceremony.

The school will deliver his degree to Dow.
