Bill Maher has suggested the only thing Democrat and Republican voters have in common is that 'they're both hoping their candidates die' ahead of the 2024 election.

The left wing comedian has been an outspoken critic of both Joe Biden, 81, and Donald Trump, 78.

He has previously faced criticism from within his own ranks for mocking the president's unsteady gait.

But in an interview with the New York Times he doubled down on the comments, joking the octogenarian should accept he walks 'like a toddler with a full diaper'.

The age of both candidates has become a flashpoint in the upcoming election, with both sides attempting to paint the other as unfit to govern.

A poll in March revealed that 60 percent of Americans do not believe either Trump or Biden have the mental faculties for the White House.

Biden aids were said to be so concerned about his 'shuffle' following a series of trips and tumbles that they now have him wearing sneakers, using shorter steps for Air Force One and surrounded by protective staff at all times.

Meanwhile, on Friday Trump suffered an embarrassing gaffe when he stumbled at the podium while giving a speech at the Minnesota Republican Party's annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner in St. Paul.

Maher, joked that Biden should just accept his lot and say, 'I walk like a toddler with a full diaper, but I believe in democracy.'

The 68-year-old admitted he would still vote for 'Biden's head in a jar of blue liquid' over Trump.

However, he acknowledged a growing sense of alienation from 'ridiculous' Democrats in recent years, explaining that this is why he has been targeting them more with his jokes.

'Because they're goofier and more obnoxious than they used to be,' he recently said on his show. 'They also just became weirder.'

But he did give credit to Biden's determination to remain in the Oval Office - while still making a jibe about his age.

'He has crossed oceans of time to be where he is, and he's not going to give it up now,' the Club Random podcast host said.

He explained that he will continue to critique the president, even if it causes ire among the left, because it is not his job to cover up any weaknesses.

Maher reiterated fears that Trump will challenge the outcome of the election as he did in 2020 if he does not win.

'It’ll be disputed and it’ll be ugly,' Maher said. He previously correctly predicted Trump's election fraud line.

Maher also hit out at students engaging in protests to end the war in Gaza, accusing them of being , 'American-hating hysterics devoid of knowledge' who support Hamas.

'It's hard to get your head around the thought of people yelling 'Death to America' on American soil,' he said.

'If they had any knowledge about the Middle East or what apartheid really means or genocide, would they be on the side of Hamas, really?'
