An eight-year-old girl has been left badly injured while riding on the back of a motorcycle being driven by her dad after a car pulled out in front of them.

Bella Martinez and her dad Enrique were traveling through Commerce City, Colorado, to meet up with family on Tuesday.

'It was a nice day, so you know, we were just going to take a nice little drive over there,' Martinez told local Fox affiliate KDVR.

But as they were heading towards their relative's house, a car pulled out in front of them, causing Martinez to lose control of the motorcycle. The driver then sped off.

'Jumped out right in front of us, and kind of just lost control right there to avoid hitting them and just went down,' he said.

Her father said his first instinct was to check and see if his daughter was okay.

'It was rough seeing her like that. I just made sure she was OK and nothing was broken off the bat. She was able to stand. We were walking. But I just sat her down right away and there was just — she was scraped up bad,' he said.

Bystanders who witnessed the accident rushed to their aid, but the person responsible for the accident was no where in sight.

'The dude who jumped in front of us, he just took off right away he didn't even stop. He didn't hit his brakes, nothing. He just kept going,' Martinez said.

Martinez's father lived around the corner from where the accident took place, so he was able to take Bella to Children's Hospital Colorado, where she was treated.

'Burn center did say she's on the verge,' said Bernadette Luevano, Bella's mom. 'If they went any deeper she would definitely need skin grafts.'

Bella was sent home Thursday with her wounds bandaged, but she will have to go back to the hospital weekly to get them redressed.

'Right now, we're just taking it week by week with the doctors just because we do not want to open the wounds up to get any infection in it,' Luevano said.

The family is waiting to hear whether or not Bella is a candidate for skin grafts.

'They're going to have burn center look at it again and determine if her skin is healing well enough. If it's not, then she's going to need skin grafts. Which is … we're hoping for the best.'

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help pay the medical bills.

Luevano said she had to put her business on hold while she takes care of her daughter.

'I'm having to cancel and reschedule all my appointments just so I can care for her properly and give her all my attention,' she said.

The family said they are just grateful Bella is alive.

'Thank God she was wearing her helmet,' Luevano said, 'or else it could have been much worse.'

There are no age restrictions for passengers traveling on the back of motorcycles in Colorado.
