NYC to Dublin portal reopens! Interactive installation was closed over lewd behavior - including flashing breasts and people 'taking drugs'

The controversial NYC to Dublin 'portal' quietly reopened Sunday - after some bad behavior from star-crossed citizens got it closed.

The installation resurfaced at 9am sharp in Manhattan and 2pm in the Irish capital, with its meant-to-be-endless livestream restarted as well.

Citizens in both cities will now have a second chance to peer into a society an ocean away, after some revelers on both sides ruined all the fun.

That culminated with the Dublin City Council announcing Tuesday that it would be pulled just six days in, due to 'inappropriate behavior by a small minority of people'.

Videos circulated online showed the proof - ranging from women baring their breasts to men mooning the camera, and someone at on the Dublin side holding up a photo of the attacks on 9/11. Others appeared to show themselves taking drugs - paving the way for the now-nixed cancellation.

'We are pleased to announce that the Portal connecting New York City and Dublin has reawakened,' Portals.org, Dublin City Council, and the Flatiron NoMad Partnership said in a joint statement five days after abruptly pulling the plug.

'We are excited to welcome people in New York and Dublin back to experience this captivating visual bridge that connects these two iconic cities.'

The installation's organizers went on to lay out some of the changes they have implemented to prevent more unsanctioned displays - like preventing people from both cities from stepping on the portals and holding phones up to its cameras.

Billing this course of action as a 'proximity-based solution', the brain trust went on to offer a statement from the installation's architect, Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys.

'As humans we are creating the Portals experience together,' he said of the portals' hopefully not as raucous reopening.

'I invite local communities not only to enjoy but to care about their Portals and how other community members are approaching the sculptures.'

As for the flashing of body parts and displaying of obscenities', the New York-based NoMad Partnernship said that its team and their partners in Dublin 'are working on additional solutions including software updates to limit such behavior.'

This includes additional on-site staffing, barriers to prevent people from stepping onto the Dublin Portal, and educational tools on how to best interact with the Portal on both sides, the outfit said - after days of disappointment from Dubliners and New Yorkers alike that the new installation had been suddenly closed.

Only Fans model Ava Louise, 25, began the lewd behavior when she flashed her breasts at Dubliners, saying she wanted them to see her 'home grown potatoes.'

She has since received thousands of death threats but has boasted about gaining thousands of more subscribers to her Only fans page.

Dubliners retaliated by 'mooning' at the screen while others held up Swastikas.

Many New Yorkers were offended when a photo of the Twin Towers on 9/11 was beamed through from Dublin.

Some others leaving the pubs in the area after closing time appeared on screen to be taking drugs.

Others held up swastikas and mobile phones with pornographic images and swear words.

A drunk woman was arrested on the first day the portal went live in Dublin by grinding against the screen.

Dublin City Council, co-sponsors of the project, decided to pull the plug after six days following the increase in obscene behavior.

Another video posted to Instagram showed a man on the Dublin side appearing to be using drugs, saying, 'what a day, what a city, New York never sleeps.'

The usual view of people waving from the historic Irish capital was interrupted within hours of the portal opening by a closeup of a man's phone.

First it displayed 'RIP Popsmoke', referring to American rapper Bashar Barakah Jackson, who was gunned down in a home invasion on February 19, 2020.

Five men stormed Jackson's house in Los Angeles demanding jewelry and shot him three times with a Beretta M92 when he tried to fight them.

The Irishman then switched the view on his phone to a video of the World Trade Center towers burning and billowing with black smoke during the 9/11 terror attack which rocked the city and the world in 2001.

Another video from the Dublin side of the portal showed a woman being dragged away from the portal by police after grinding against the screen.

'Basically she was there for about 20 minutes very drunk and was slapping and grinding against the portal before guards stepped in,' the person who filmed it explained.

Less extreme was an Irishman who waved at the dozens of Americans on the other side, before turning around and mooning them.

Another man held up a swastika on his phone, and plenty of middle fingers were exchanged on both sides.

Amidst the shenanigans of varying degrees of offensiveness, there have been some wholesome moments captured on both sides of the portal.

Before it was closed down, crowds on both sides of the portals were mostly behaved. Some gave a friendly wave or made heart signs with their hands.

Killian Sundermann, a 30-year-old from Dublin who was in New York on a visit, held his phone to his ear as he waved and spoke to his girlfriend watching from the Dublin side.

At one point, he approached the security barrier and jokingly attempted to impersonate someone going down an escalator.

Lynn Rakos, 60-year-old Brooklyn resident waved who lived for a time in Dublin blew a kiss toward the screen.

'I think it´s sweet, as long as we all behave. We have all these connections on our phone and Facebook, but here it's unscripted. You don´t know who is there and you're just saying hi,' Rakos said

In one case, a man in a rainy New York was seen being cheered on by people in Dublin as he smashed out 50 push ups. The Irish crowd were seen giving him a round of applause as he stood up triumphantly.

In another clip, two friends - one in New York and one in Dublin - were seen meeting via the portal. The video was captioned: 'meeting up with my Irish bestie through a portal' - and showed the two women making heart symbols with their hands.

The displays will operate through the fall, but an official end date has not been announced.

'Portals are an invitation to meet people above borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is - united and one,' said Benediktas Gylys, a Lithuanian artist and founder of The Portal.

Gylys first thought of the concept in 2016 when a spiritual experience led him to view the planet through a different lens and he developed the need to 'counter polarizing ideas' and find a way for people from different cultures to communicate.

He provided the majority of the funds needed to build the first two portals in collaboration with a team from VilniusTech University in Lithuania.

The first two portals opened in May 2021 in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and in the Polish city, Lublin.

As of writing, the portal now has new daily operating hours between 6am and 4pm EST.
