A Canadian restaurant has sparked outrage after forcing customers to tip using a very sneaky trick.

The underhand tactic was shared to Reddit's popular Mildly Infuriating thread by an anonymous user.

The post included a photo of the credit card terminal which had been modified by the eatery to get patrons to add a tip.

But the method left other users on the discussion platform in disbelief.

The post, which was shared at the weekend, was titled: 'This restaurant covered up the "No Tip" option with a sticker to force tipping.'

An accompanying photo then showed a credit card machine with black tape covering up the part of the screen.

The two printed labels simply read: 'Tip, thank you.'

It meant that customers were restricted to only use the preset options of 13, 15 and 18 per cent.

The name of the restaurant was not provided but, elaborating further in the comments, the original poster wrote: 'The screen was touch-screen so I pressed on the sticker lol.

'She was staring at me as I pressed on the sticker hiding the "No Tip" option.

'Should you still tip if you served yourself and bussed your own table? Because it was that type of restaurant. I'm all for it if I was being served, but I did it myself.

'Crazy that there was no service, just her doing her job, and she expected a tip.'

Unsurprisingly, the post was soon flooded with comments from other disgruntled customers who slammed tipping culture throughout both Canada and the US

It continued: 'I hate that it now has become a opt-out system instead of opt-in.

'Things like service charges and mandatory gratuity make it difficult for me to want to go out for food anymore. I guess it's better for me anyway to eat at home.'

One person described the move as a 'new low' as another reminded readers that 'tipping is OPTIONAL.'

Someone else dished: 'I consider myself a generous tipper, but I wouldn't tip at all if this is how they're going to play this game.'

'I'd look them dead in the eye as I remove the sticker and push "no tip,"' another commented.
