A fresh lawsuit filed against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has accused him of exerting excessive force against a woman just a few months before the killing of George Floyd.

On Tuesday, a complaint, seeking $9 million in damages, was filed by Robins Kaplan LLP in federal Minnesota court against Chauvin and his former partner, Ellen Jensen.

The suit alleged that in January 2020, some five months before George Floyd's death, a woman named Patty Day was 'violently jerked from her car' and thrown to the ground by Chauvin and Jensen.

Chauvin then allegedly applied his knee to Day's back while she lay there handcuffed - the same stance he would infamously take for some nine minutes during his encounter with Floyd.

Day says that due to the excessive force used against her, she suffered 'significant' arm and shoulder injuries, as well as a fractured tooth.

All the while, Jensen did nothing to intervene, according to the suit.

It continues to argue that the City of Minneapolis was aware that officers within its police department had a history of 'gratuitous use of excessive force.'

In the press release that accompanied the firm's filing of the complaint Tuesday, Day said: 'Sadly, my experience with Derek Chauvin is not unique.'

'George Floyd died at the hands of this individual, and had the City intervened on his behavior after my interaction, he could still be alive today ... It was a traumatic part of my life that I hope no one else will have to endure.'

Day is asking for $9million in compensatory damages, in addition to punitive damages in an amount that will be determined by a jury.

Several years ago, former officer Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder for the killing of Floyd, an incident that launched the country into a summer of riots and protests in the name of racial justice.

Chauvin is currently serving a 22-year sentence.

Last spring, the Minneapolis City Council agreed to settle two civil cases filed against Chauvin for close to $9million.

Both suits alleged that the former law enforcement officer used excessive force several years before Floyd's death, including one that involved a 14-year-old.

The eight-digit settlement arrived two years after the city approved a historically large $27million settlement with Floyd's family.
