Actor Rafe Spall has revealed he now refuses to film sex scenes as he hits back at 'outrageous' websites that document celebrity nudity in film and TV.

The star, 41, who is currently starring in the Apple TV+ plus series Trying, discussed his aversion to on-screen nudity on comedian Kathy Burke's podcast Where There's A Will, There's a Wake.

During the interview, the conversation turned to Rafe's romance with his co-star Esther Smith - who is expecting their first child

After the pair began dating, Rafe revealed that he felt 'shy' acting in front of Esther and admitted he felt 'vulnerable'.

Kathy then broached the subject of how the real-life couple now feel when kissing for the camera, which prompted Rafe to discuss his feelings about sex scenes.

The star said: 'People are always very curious about sex scenes, I've actually now said that I don't want to do them anymore.

'I've done loads. Too many.'

The father-of-three - who was married to Hollyoaks actress Elize du Toit from 2010-2021 - revealed that he's been asked if the scenes are 'nice' to film.

He joked: 'They're nice if you like 50 blokes watching you pretend to have sex. If that's your thing!

'And also, I've had my willy out too many times.'

In 2021, Rafe told Jay Rayner on his Out to Lunch podcast that he has filmed roughly 18 love scenes over the course of his career

He said: 'I couldn’t sleep one night and I counted my sex scenes. I have done about 18 at last count. I have had my willy out a lot. Too much!'

The star revealed that he wanted to stop filming sex scenes for the sake of his 13-year-old daughter Lena and sons, who are aged 11 and nine.

Rafe continued: 'I’ve stopped. I’ve stopped. I’m not doing it any more. I’ve got kids in the playground going - they are the age when kids talk to them about it.

'It is not good. It is wholeheartedly inelegant to get your willy out!'

One of Rafe's first sex scenes appeared in the 2006 BBC drama The Chatterley Affair. Later that year, his love scenes in Wide Sargasso Sea also aired.

Elaborating on how 'strange' it is, he went on: 'You do a sex scene and this is how I pay my mortgage. This is what I exchange for cash.'

Reflecting on his favourite, he recalled starring in 2008 TV film Frankie Howerd: Rather You Than Me.

'A high point of the sex scenes in my life - my number one was probably with David Walliams. He played Frankie Howerd and I played his life-long lover Dennis.

'David has become a great friend. He is a really lovely, loyal person. But part of his bit in life is being flirtatious. That is part of his Schick. And being very fluid across the genders. That is part of his thing.

'But when it came to the sex scene he was all scared. I had done so many of them. And the ones with David. I w**ked him off and I had to kiss him and we had to do all sorts of things. I had to get in the bath with him.

'And when you do a sex scene with a woman I am always acutely aware that you are in a room with predominantly men so all my concentration goes into making it as comfortable for her. But with David it was like, "f**king come here you big dish. Get over there!"'

Earlier this month, Rafe and his girlfriend appeared on Lorraine to promote the fourth series of the Apple TV+ comedy, and Esther said: 'I've got a little bump.'

In Trying, Rafe and Esther portray couple Jason Ross and Nikki Newman who want to become parents, but struggle to conceive a child.

When the host asked if the pregnancy could be weaved into a potential series five plot, Esther said: 'We hope there's another series.'
