The Brazilian police is probing whether a millionaire's wife may have plotted her own kidnapping with her alleged lover after he paid more than $750,000 for her freedom.

Anic Herdy, 54, whose 78-year-old husband Benjamin Herdy is the heir to a sprawling estate, was last seen February 29 when she visited a mall in Petropolis, near Rio.

She reportedly sent her two children a text message on March 13 indicating she was leaving the country to start a new life with her lover, according to CBN Radio.

Surveillance camera images showed Anic, a lawyer, was with Lourival Fadiga, who authorities have identified as her kidnapper and purported love interest.

Anic Herdy has not been seen since February 29 when she was reportedly kidnapped from a mall in Petrópolis, a municipality outside Rio de Janeiro. But Brazilian investigators believe the 54-year-old lawyer may have plotted her own disappearance in an attempt to take money from her 78-year-old husband

A Rio de Janeiro Civil Police report released Tuesday indicated that Anic Herdy may have played a role in orchestrating and that she was aware that Fadiga was going to fake the abduction at the mall parking lot.

Fadiga and his two children, Henrique Fadiga and Maria Fadiga, and Rebecca Azevedo, whom he dated, are currently under arrest as part of the investigation in kidnapping and extortion.

Civil Police investigators obtained security footage from the mall parking lot that spotted Anic Herdy placing an object, which they believe was her cell phone, underneath the seat of her own vehicle.

The findings also revealed that Herdy used a cell phone with a SIM card that was under Lourival Fadiga's name to call him and meeting with him outside the mall.

Investigators learned that Fadiga used a SIM card that was under listed under Benjamin Herdy's name to place the phone call to report that Anic Herdy had been abducted.

Fadiga allegedly removed the SIM card from his cell phone, which was turned off between 9:19 am and 3:36 pm on the day of the kidnapping and kept Benjamin Herdy's SIM card activated. This allowed agents to track the movement of Fadiga's vehicle.

Authorities also inspected camera near the mall that showed Fadiga's SUV moving in the area where Anic Herdy was seen walking. Investigators suggested that it took Fadiga one minute to advance 984 feet before stopping to pick her up.

Lourival Fadiga's children, Henrique Fadiga and Maria Fadiga (left and right), are also in police custody for allegedly aiding him in the kidnapping of Brazilian lawyer Anic Herdy, who police believe may have planned her own disappearance

The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police's hypothesis is that Anic Herdy was looking to squeeze money out of Benjamin Herdy, whose family inherited his father's fortune after he died in 1989.

The family's estate included Unigranrio Ayfa University, which was sold in 2021 for 700 million Brazilian reals, about $135.7 million. They received 60 percent up front and the remaining 40 percent is paid in four annual payments.

The couple also owned a real estate company and are partners at a career development company.

They met Fadiga three years ago when he presented himself as a police officer and offered them computer services.

He was eventually hired by the family and set up the surveillance security system at their residence in Teresópolis.

Investigators spoke with business owner in Foz do Iguaçu, a municipality in the southern state of of Paraná, who claimed Anic Herdy and Fadiga visited regularly together and identified themselves as lovers and that he saw them kiss multiple times.

Benjamin Herdy made 40 wire transfers of 3.3 million Brazilian reals, around $658,800, and 680,000 Brazilian reals, about 132,100, worth of bitcoins to Fadiga so that he could coordinate that Anic Herdy's release.

'All the ransom money was directed to Lourival, as he, in total manipulation of Benjamin, who trusted him blindly , indicated bank accounts to which transfers should be made to pay the ransom,' the Rio de Janeiro Public Ministry said.

'Still not suspecting that he was being deceived by Lourival, Benjamin handed over the dollars and the money withdrawn to Lourival so that he, on March 11, could supposedly find the kidnappers and pay the ransom.'

Fadiga was supposed to drop off the money at a garbage bin in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, a neighborhood in the west side of Rio de Janeiro on March 11. Instead, he used the money to purchase a $97,000 RAM 3500 Longhorn pickup truck and a Royal Enfield motorcycle for $5,600 on March 11 and registered both under his daughter's name.

He also bought 950 cell phones that were mailed to his daughter.

'Either she is missing or has actually been murdered,' Civil Police chief Cristiana Onorato told Brazilian news outlet G1. 'The police do not rule out any possibility, but I believe that because of this ambition and this impunity, Anic may have lost her life.'
