Veteran actress Constance Marie has blasted Hollywood studios for failing to represent Latino audiences enough in screen projects, calling out celebrated actress Carey Mulligan's casting in Oscar-nominated drama Maestro.

Marie, 58, who has enjoyed a long career in TV and film, slammed studio bosses for 'unintentional racism' and 'unfair labor practices' over their commissioning process and Latino artists.

She referred to Mulligan, a white Englishwoman, being hired to play Costa Rican actress Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein in 2023 film Maestro, as a recent example of a misstep by Hollywood casting directors.

She also called out Californian-raised James Franco for being cast as Cuban leader Fidel Castro in the new movie Alina Of Cuba.

Marie spoke to DailyMail.com exclusively at The 17th Annual George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic in Toluca Lake, California last month.

The pair has remained friends, since she played Lopez's wife Angie in his hit sitcom George Lopez, which ran from 2002 to 2007.

Marie lashed out at executives for not offering opportunities for her community and providing 'diminished roles.'

She charged that while Latinos make up almost one in five of the population 'only four percent' of roles in TV and films are from that community.

She also questioned where Native American voices are in the business currently.

Marie, who played Selena's mother in the biopic of the murdered Tejano singer, and appeared on NBC's daytime soap Santa Barbara, urged key figures at studios to increase the visibility of Hispanics on screen.

The 58-year-old questioned how in tune with the real world many Tinseltown decision makers are claiming 'it's like if you only ever know your nanny, your gardener, and the person who valet parks your car, then you don't see beyond your bubble.'

Marie did not rant, but outlined a frustration with studios for making cutbacks and reducing output, while their CEOs appear to pocket larger pay packets.

Marie, speaking on camera, said: 'The hard part for us is that the progress is inconsistent.'

After expressing upset at how several significant Latina shows have been canceled in recent months, she also highlighted her disappointment at high profile casting issues.

'We've had four shows recently just canceled...we had really good shows and they were canceled.

'But then there's not a plethora of other shows to replace them to maintain the representation level, we have to start all over again.

'And so maintaining momentum, and I've been doing this for 35 years, so I'm just thankful that at least Latinos are most often getting to play the Latino storylines.'

But then she noted white A-list stars who have recently been cast to play Hispanic characters.

'Like Maestro, the woman who was Leonard Bernstein's wife was a Chilean woman raised in Costa Rica, and it was played by Carey Mulligan, not a Latin woman...,' she said.

Marie slightly misspoke, as Cohen's real wife, Felicia Montealegre, was a Costa Rica-born woman raised in Santiago, Chile but nonetheless Latina.

'So that kind of cultural appropriation that happens, that's definitely an unfair labor practice, but it happened all the time before,' she added.

'Now it's a one-off.

'We have James Franco playing Castro. That's just an unfair labor practice and should not happen anymore. And not only that, if you want Latinos to come see your show, we're not coming.

'And that's 19% of the population. So just do the math.'

She remains unhappy at studio casting decisions like that of Mulligan and Franco.

'It may not be overt racism, but again, it's like if you live in a bubble and you don't have any representation of diverse ethnicity in that bubble, it's racism, unintentional racism. '

A 2023 report by the National Women's Law Center (NWLC) noted on average, Latinas are paid just 52 cents for every dollar paid to white, non Hispanic men.

The probe examining 2022 pay packets showed the statistic of 52 cents to every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men was to part time Latina workers, which many actors are considered to be because of the fluid hiring nature of Hollywood.

Marie added the studios are damaging their own potential by ignoring that hispanic audiences spend vast amounts of access to entertainment.

'Green – that's the color everybody understands. And Latinos spend so much money in media buying.'
