A job seeker was left red-faced after misunderstanding a simple question from an employer.
The candidate sat down in front of her potential boss and was asked how she got there. Thinking the boss was simply curious about her commute, she said she'd taken the bus.
However, she was actually being asked about her career background and what led to her to applying for the job.
The admission prompted hundreds of others to share their own job interview 'fails' with many amusing mix-ups.
'What's the earliest you've messed up a job interview?' the job hunter asked on Reddit before sharing her own embarrassing tale.
A candidate left a job interview feeling very embarrassed after they misinterpreted the employer's simple question. They sat down at the meeting and was asked how they got there
'I was asked, "Tell me how you got here today?" and I said by bus. I got a stone-cold stare as the realisation hit me.
'He meant in my career not to the physical office. The remaining 58 minutes were going through the motions.'
Users thought the story was hysterical and said the interviewer's question was phrased ambiguously.
'To be honest, that's a weird way to phrase the question,' one person said.
''Tell me how you got here today?' is very open to interpretation. I'd have done the same as you,' a second agreed.
'I've been interviewing a lot lately. I would not at all be bothered by that answer, it would be an amusing ice-breaker, to be honest,' an employer said.
'Any interviewer who didn't find that amusing would be an awful person to work for,' another pointed out.
The job seeker said the interviewer 'wasn't in the mood to break the ice and to laugh it off', saying the 'death stare' he gave after they answered 'still haunts them'.
Thinking they were curious about the commute, the candidate said they got the bus and was meant with a cold stare. They were actually being asked about their career background
People started sharing their job interview nightmares including one who was confused when asked about their 'background'.
'I look behind myself and back around to video call, 'Well it's a sort of mirror?'. 'I mean what is your background in work?'. I still haven't recovered from that,' they laughed.
Another was asked if they had a driver's licence and a car. When they confirmed the interview wanted to know if 'it was clean'.
'Yes' 'Is it clean?'. 'Er, yeah, I washed it the other day actually'. 'I meant the licence',' they recalled.
'The building was confusing and I walked through the wrong door. The interviewer saw and told the receptionist 'I definitely don't want that one',' a third remembered.
'It was one of my first job interviews since I was only 18/19, but I asked them what the notice period was. The look on their faces was priceless and obviously I did not get the job,' a fourth said.
Someone said they had a heated disagreement, with shouting and rude hand gestures, with a driver in the car park before their interview who turned out to be the hiring manager.
'I was told I had a colourful CV. I said 'Thanks, it's just a Microsoft Word template',' one woman cringed.
'Had two interviews lined up...one in the AM and one in the PM at competing firms. Only a special kind of idiot would get them mixed up,' a second answered.
