A pair of car thieves in Milwaukee wrecked a vehicle in the middle of a TV interview about a local shooting before the driver took off running and left his injured friend behind.

The hit-and-run crash was caught on camera at around 7pm on Sunday by the TMJ4 television crew which was interviewing residents about the fatal shooting of 15-year-olds Monroe Weso and Alejandro Sanchez.

A grey sedan smashed into a parked mini-van and caused significant damage with debris flying everywhere.

The driver of the stolen vehicle sprinted away as the 16-year-old passenger crawled out injured and was tended to by a woman who witnessed the crash.

He was taken to hospital for treatment while the driver got away after stealing a second car and police are still searching for him. A 57-year-old man was in the mini-van at the time of the crash and was also treated for his injuries.

The television crew was finishing an interview about a fatal shooting when the grey sedan came speeding past and smashed into the parked mini-van.

Footage shows the driver getting out and running away while his injured friend is left hurt on the floor.

Two women then went to help the injured passenger and took him out of the wreck of the car.

He was then arrested by the Milwaukee Police Department and treated in hospital for his injuries.

But the driver is still on the run and authorities say he made his getaway in a freshly stolen car.

Grey McEachern, who witnessed the crash said: 'You could see the first kid, the driver, he got out and he ran. I've never seen something like that before.

'That car could've killed somebody. It ran onto the grass, there were children on the grass.'

Mayor Cavalier Johnson reacted to the horror-crash and said: 'The passenger in that video that you just showed me, he couldn't even get up, he couldn't even move.

'He tried to get out of the car and he collapsed. You don't want that to be your kid or a kid you care about. Let's have these conversations and let's put a stop to this.'

Police are still searching for the driver of the vehicle and have appealed for anyone with any information to get in touch.

It comes after teenage boys Monroe Weso and Alejandro Sanchez were shot dead in Milwaukee on May 19.

Police have arrested a 13-year-old boy in connection with their deaths and are looking for two other suspects.

The families of the victims have set up GoFundMe pages to help raise funds for funeral costs.
