Two Jordanian nationals who attempted to breach a critically important military base are in the U.S. illegally, as fears over foreign espionage escalate.

The Jordanian nationals were detained after attempting to drive a box truck onto Marine Corps Base Quantico on May 3. During their attempted entry, the two individuals claimed to be working for Amazon as subcontractors.

Despite their goal to infiltrate the installation, military officials were able to deploy vehicle barriers and foil the Middle Eastern nationals' efforts.

Now, a Fox News report indicates that one of the individuals illegally crossed into the U.S. by way of Mexico through California in April and the other overstayed a student visa.

The new details about the Jordanians' who tried to unlawfully enter Quantico - one of the largest Marine bases in the U.S. - comes just a week after Congress held a classified hearing on attempts by foreign nationals to infiltrate and surveil U.S. military installations

Both of the individuals are now in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, according to multiple Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials in the report.

The Jordanian who illegally entered the U.S. in April did so through the San Diego, California, sector, which has seen a dramatic increase in illegal immigration this year.

According to the DHS sources, the male apprehended was issued a notice to appear - a legal process requiring him to show up for an immigration court hearing at a date in the future.

The pair are now being prepared for removal proceedings, the sources disclosed.

An Amazon spokesperson told the outlet that it seems the Jordanians in question were not making deliveries on behalf of the company and that they will investigate the incident further.

Lawmakers and government officials are also probing the matter.

Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee sent a letter to DHS, the Pentagon, and the FBI seeking additional information on the incident.

The GOP lawmakers said one of the Jordanians may also be on federal terrorist watchlist.

'The Committee fears that the Department of Homeland Security's relaxed vetting standards, which complement President Biden's avowed desire to 'surge the border' with inadmissible migrants, have created an environment ripe for exploitation by individuals aiming to undermine the United States at its most critical points.'

'If individuals on the terrorist watchlist are so emboldened to attempt to breach a Marine Corps base, the Department of Homeland Security and the entire executive branch must act swiftly to identify, apprehend, and detain such hostile actors on American soil,' the Republicans letter stated.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin also expressed his dismay in a letter to Biden.

'The attempted breach at Quantico, and the federal government's silence on the immigration status of the individuals involved, reiterates the gravity of your failure to secure the southern border, and to provide state governments notice of illegal migrant relocations so I can protest the safety of all Virginians.'

The Virginian demanded that Biden provide state officials a briefing on the attempted intrusion.

'Please explain how they came to the United States. Were they here illegally? Are either of them on any terrorist watchlist?' Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., asked DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas in a recent letter.

Previously, a top Republican told DailyMail.com in an exclusive interview that foreign nationals from a multitude of countries have been attempting to infiltrate U.S. military bases.

China, Iran, Russia and terrorist groups from the Middle East are involved in attempting access to U.S. instillations Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wis., said.

'There have been reports that off of our military bases ... that we have had foreign nationals here taking pictures and recording what's going on.'

He also claimed that various foreign nationals 'maybe getting jobs as DoorDash or something or other and then poking around, seeing what they can find out' from the U.S. military bases.

Reports further indicate that foreign nationals have operated drones to enhance their surveillance efforts.

And Grothman warned that these attempts have grown significantly in recent years.

'It's not something that we believe was going on a very significant degree just a few years ago,' he said. 'So this new stuff.'

The Wisconsin Republican said the rise in espionage attempts comes as record numbers of non-hispanic foreign nationals are pouring across the U.S.-Mexico border into the American heartland.

And the details now revealing the Jordanians are in the U.S. illegally are sure to add to Grothman and his fellow lawmaker's suspicions.
