A former cop has been arrested for the murder of an 86-year-old retired police chief in Brazil

Rodrigo Costa, 52, allegedly disguised himself as a delivery man and attacked Hudson Maldonado inside his home and set him on fire on Wednesday, authorities in the southeastern state of Sete Lagoas revealed.

Costa walked into a police station Friday morning and turned himself in.

Authorities are investigating whether Costa sought out revenge for being fired from the Minas Gerais Civil Police in 2006 for extorting a woman.

Rodrigo Costa turned himself in police in the southeastern Brazilian city of Sete Lagoas on Friday, just two days after he allegedly broke into the home of Hudson Maldonado, the former Minas Gerais Civil Police chief, and burned him alive over an alleged feud after he was fired from the force in 2006

As a lawyer, Maldonado was involved in the internal affairs' investigation at the time.

Costa allegedly rang the intercom at the residential complex's gate and identified himself as a delivery man for a pharmacy.

Authorities said the ex-cop threatened Maldonado's caregiver with a knife and told her that he had 'dispute for 18 years' with Maldonado and proceeded to his apartment.

Costa then allegedly broke into Maldonado's residence, where he had been confined for the last six months while recovering from a stroke.

He allegedly stabbed him and wrapped the body with a mattress before he poured a gallon of gasoline and burned him alive.

Security cameras picked up Rodrigo Costa at the apartment complex on Wednesday. He turned himself in the police Friday and is waiting to be arraigned on one count of murder

Costa told police investigators that he waited 18 years to carry out his revenge because the Supreme Court had ratified the police department's decision.

But cops said he admitted he only wanted to hurt Maldonado, not kill him.

'He wanted to present himself and is willing to answer for the entire procedure,' homicide department chief Fernanda de Assis said. 'He also stated that he had no intention of killing and that he regretted the crime.'

Costa is facing one count of murder and is facing 12 years in prison if he is convicted.

It is unclear if Costa has entered a different plea despite his earlier admission.
