The owner of a naturist resort in Fuerteventura has revealed the biggest mistake that people make when they sign up.

Karie Jane, from Derbyshire, set up the BHH Naturist Resort in the Canary Islands, Spain, after first trying the lifestyle 20 years ago.

The 57-year-old now runs retreats where she hosts groups of strangers who have 'booked separately' to enjoy the hotel rooms at her clothing-optional property as well as hosting families and couples.

Delving into what people fail to understand at her resort, Karie said that people think nudism is about sex.

On her resort website, Karie writes: 'Being nude with others is not embarrassing. Nudism is not porn.

'In fact, its easy to forget that everyone is naked and just because they are, does not make for a sexually charged atmosphere either.

'If you're going to an event or beach for a thrill… you might as well buy a magazine and do us all a favour and stay home.

'Any sexual activity in a public setting is not only offensive... it is illegal. Nobody wants to see that.

'However, holding hands, a hug or simple kissing is fine. If you want to show extra affection with someone you love, I suggest you get a room or wait till you're back home to do so.'

Discussing what can happen if someone gets an erection at her naturist resort, Katie went on by saying: 'Yes, they can happen, especially if you are new to nudism.

'The best way to deal with this is to either turn over on your towel, or if you are at a beach, you can stay in the water until your situation comes more under control.'

If someone is drawing attention to the fact that they're standing to attention, Karie remarks that they should be reported.

She explains: 'If you see someone with an obvious erection and is purposely drawing attention, let a lifeguard or authorities know about this and in most cases, they will be kicked out and banned from coming back again.'

Staring at someone's body is also frowned up. Karie's website says: 'It is very rude to stare and moreover, if you are going to have a conversation with someone make sure you are talking to them with proper eye contact.

'If you're going to an event or beach for a thrill… you might as well buy a magazine and do us all a favour and stay home.'

Karie explained that the draw of nudism is 'the freedom from wearing clothes and to feel liberated'.

The resort owner said: 'When you’ve seen dozens of naked people in a day, trust me, you start to feel way less concerned about whether your boobs, your labia, your pubes, your cellulite, your freckles, your whatever-other-hang up, is normal.

'Because you can see, very clearly, that it is.'

In March earlier this year, a keen traveler shed light on what it is really like going on a nude cruise - with less luggage to pack being one of the major perks.

Writing anonymously on Reddit the man, aged 67, invited other users to 'ask me anything' about the experience.

He booked a cruise via the Texas-based travel company Bare Necessities, which has been operating clothing-optional ship charters since 1990.

The unnamed man said he was on a 2,000 passenger Carnival cruise liner with his 61-year-old wife for a seven-day round trip from Tampa, Florida, with stops in Mexico and Honduras along the way.

He reiterated to other Reddit users that the trip - his first ever nudist cruise - was 'not a swingers cruise or a sex positive environment' and 'this was a crowd with lots of nudist experience.'

Explaining the ins and outs of nudist cruising, he revealed that the captain 'generally makes an announcement after exiting a port when clothes can be removed' and 'usually it's about thirty minutes.'

The same then happens in reverse, when the ship starts nearing its next port of call.

He added that people 'usually take advantage of the opportunity to be nude since that's the point of the cruise.'

On the staff side of things, he said all of the cruise workers were clothed 'except for one male/female duo' who performed in the theatre.
