Devin Haney's father and trainer, Bill Haney, has called on Ryan Garcia to be given a lifetime ban from boxing after he tested positive for a banned substance.

Garcia upset Haney in a thrilling bout last month, only for it emerge shortly after fight night that he had failed anti-doping tests.

The 25-year-old, who denies wrongdoing, tested positive for ostarine in both his A and B samples.

The tests were administered the day before and the day of the fight in Brooklyn.

Haney has called for the result to be reversed - to a disqualification win - with the New York State Athletic Commission insisting earlier this week that their investigation remains ongoing.

But following news of the B sample findings, Haney Sr has urged the boxing authorities to ban Garcia for life.

'Clearly... there's nothing that you can do with this guy, but get him out of the sport,' he told TMZ.

'It's a terrible thing... it's a terrible thing for sports in general. It's a terrible thing for boxing.'

Garcia has denied knowingly taking performance enhancing drugs.

He also claims to have submitted a hair sample for testing in a bid to clear his name.

But Haney Sr said he is not sure his son would take a rematch even if they could guarantee Garcia was clean.

'You see me with my kids, I don't know what to tell them. The Haneys - we're fair. We believe in hard work and I feel undermined. For him to sign up to do this and now to make a mockery of the sport,' he said. 'It's just terrible.'

In a statement to ESPN, meanwhile, the NYSAC said:  'The Commission strictly prohibits the use of performance enhancing drugs and works vigorously to uphold the integrity of the sport and maintain a level playing field.

'Where violations are found, the Commission will take action.'
