Fans of a 90s comedy classic have been left buzzing with excitement after Netflix confirmed a sequel to the film is in the works.

Adam Sandler is finally returning to play one of his most iconic characters after Netflix announced a sequel to Happy Gilmore.

The 57-year-old comedian and actor will reprise his role as the title character after previously playing him in the 1996 movie.

Happy Gilmore featured the then Saturday Night Live star as a failed hockey player with anger issues who is convinced to take up golf.

The struggling sportsman then uses his newly discovered talent to try to win enough money to save his grandmother's home from foreclosure.

Now, almost three decades later, Happy Gilmore is set to return to the green.

Netflix announced earlier this month at its 2024 Upfront presentation at the Pier 59 Studios in New York City that Sandler will reprise the iconic role, but has not yet confirmed a release date, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter

The original comedy has gone on to be one of Sandler's most popular films with one of his most recognisable roles.

The news comes after one of the comedy legend's good friends and regular costars - including Drew Barrymore - indicated in April that a Happy Gilmore sequel was in the works.

And it's hinted that some of the game's most famous faces and colourful characters, including Tiger Woods, could be scripted into the new film

Although fans will have to wait and see how Gilmore's golfing career will be resurrected, they have taken to X to share their glee over the long-awaited news.

One fan wrote: 'This has made my year,' while another tweeted, 'This is going to be incredible.'

Another Sandler fan said: 'Adam Sandler gets a bit of a kicking and I'd agree, not all of his films are great, but I love Happy Gilmore and I'm glad to hear it's finally getting a sequel on Netflix.'

McDonald and Drew Barrymore both hinted in recent months that Sandler was working on a screenplay for Happy Gilmore 2, but the film was only now confirmed to be in the works

One person, who had cancelled their Netflix decision, decided to reverse their decision after hearing the news, writing: 'I finally cancelled my subscription to Netflix after wasting it for years...

'Then they decide to do a Happy Gilmore sequel and the most anticipated movie of the last 20 years is about to get released on its platform Here we go signing up again for Netflix!'

Another fan said: 'So they are going to make a Happy Gilmore 2 eh? This is a sequel I can get behind. This has a lot of potential.'

Meanwhile, a new fan of the original film expressed their excitement after recently watching it for the first time, writing: 'Amazing movie and apparently I picked a good time to watch it because a sequel is about to come out.'

It comes as comedy fans are over the moon after the release of a new sitcom series on Netflix - which stars comedian Shane Gillis as a mechanic who shares his first name and works at an auto shop.
