Matthew Hussey, the leading dating coach with more than three million subscribers on YouTube, has warned that there are two glaring red flags to look out for if you want to avoid heartache later down the line.
Speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, the US-based dating guru warned that the 'inability to say sorry' and 'not keeping promises' are both big warning signs - but added that you shouldn't be too rigid when it comes to relationship deal breakers.
Discussing his new book, Love Life: How to Raise Your Standards, Find Your Person, and Live Happily (No Matter What), Hussey told host Evans: 'I always say red flags are a dangerous thing because we live in a world where everything's become a red flag to people.'
But despite saying we should let some minor mistakes slide, Hussey said there are certain red flags that 'actually matter' and 'ignoring them' would make 'happiness virtually impossible'.
The life coach explained that if he was to discount 'superfluous red flags' and state the ones 'that actually matter' the two crucial ones are the inability to say sorry and not keeping promises.
The dating guru advised against being too rigid about red flags in the beginning, but warned that there are two that should be deal breakers
Hussey continued: 'Neither of those things, as a one-off, are necessarily the end of the world. We've all broken a promise, forgotten to do something we said we would do.
'We've all had an argument where we found it hard to say sorry in that argument. But as a chronic condition of someone who isn't good for their word, and someone who can't say sorry, those two on their own are quite potent red flags.
'But together, they become what I think of as a kind of dark pairing. Because if you have someone who can't keep their promises, but then when they don't keep their promise, they can't even be accountable for it. They can't say sorry. Yeah, that's a really potent combination.'
Hussey, who was recently linked to Camila Cabello after the singer revealed she lost her virginity to the dating guru aged 20, first began working as a life coach in the UK his late teens before moving to the US in his twenties and attracting a celebrity following including Eva Longoria and Tyra Banks.

The life coach and bestselling author wed his current partner Audrey Le Strat in 2023
His first book, Get the Guy: Learn Secrets of the Male Mind to Find the Man You Want and the Love You Deserve, was published in 2013 and went on to be a New York Times bestseller.
In his new book, which was released in April 2024, Hussey helps readers to create an action plan for finding a healthy relationship by letting go of negative past experiences and learning how to spot green flags in a potential partner.
In his discussion with Evans, Hussey also goes on to say that those looking for a new relationship shouldn't put 'chemistry' at the top of their wish-list when it comes to a new partner.
'We tend to have very high standards about things that don't matter, especially growing up, when we're in our 20s, and so on,' the dating coach continued.
'The person you're dating now, or in a relationship with now, they don't have to win the award for greatest chemistry you've ever had in your life.
'You need chemistry with them in some form.
'But guess what, you also need a bunch of other things that are massively important to an actual relationship, like reliability and loyalty and consistency and respect and being seen by that person.
'These are the things that we have to start prioritising if we want to be happier. We have to start actually chasing the right things instead of the wrong things.'
Matthew Hussey appeared on ITV's This Morning back in 2019 to discuss viewers' dating dilemmas
Despite being one of the world's leading dating gurus, Matthew is now out of the dating game himself after wedding Audrey Le Strat, who he met at a party through mutual friends, in Sicily in 2023.
Before that Matthew dated American singer Camilla Cabello when she was 20 years old. Camila, now 27, recently opened up about her time with the life coach, saying he 'expanded her world'.
The singer, who was part of Fifth Harmony before embarking on a solo career, told Dax Shephard on his Armchair Podcast that she met Hussey at a TV studio on the US and the pair started dating.
She expanded: 'We went to dinner that night and that was my first relationship. It was late for my first relationship. I was 20. That was my first time having sex. First lovemaking was at 20, 21.
'But I think that also honestly made him a great partner. He was a really great person. It was like the perfect first relationship. It really expanded my world because he wasn't in my industry too.'
