A New England couple shared the alarming moment a frying pan caught fire and went flying across their kitchen, still flaming, as they ran for cover.
LaTeasha 'Teash' Brost and her wife, Rachel, co-host a podcast and share glimpses into their daily lives with a modest TikTok audience of a little more than 36,000 followers.
One particular video took the Internet by storm. Footage from the couple's home security camera showing the moment a grease fire erupted in their kitchen racked up nearly 7 million views in three days.
The video begins with Teash standing over the stovetop as she tends to a pan, which suddenly bursts into flame. Teash gasps.
'Babe, we have a fire! What do I do?' she calls to her wife, audibly panicking.
A New England couple has gone viral after sharing footage of the moment a grease fire erupted in their kitchen
The clip, which shows LaTeasha 'Teash' Brost and her wife Rachel frantically running for cover, racked up nearly 7 million views in just three days
Rachel instructs her to 'go outside' while asking incredulously, 'What did you do?'
But Teash has already placed the pan in the sink. She turns the faucet on and a wall of flames rises into the air.
Rachel begins running to the door with Teash at her heels, still holding the pan. However, she trips and rolls across the floor, nearly landing on one of the couple's Maltese dogs.
The pan goes clattering off camera. When Teash gets to her feet, she discovers that the fire has been extinguished.
In a follow up video, Teash said she knew adding water to the grease fire was a potentially deadly mistake, 'but at the time my brain was everywhere.'
As oil is less dense than water, it is pushed to the surface when water is added, causing the flames to spread.
Teash explained that she dropped the pan because she had suffered burns, and held up her bandaged right hand as proof.
'It literally was so hot that I let go,' she said. 'Had I not done that, I would've had much worse - my burns are only second-degree, so I'm very lucky.'
She conceded that she 'did everything you should not do' and knew she was embarrassed herself by choosing to share the video but wanted people to 'learn from (her) mistake.'
Teash (left) said she was sharing the video to educate her followers on what not to do
This includes adding water to the pan, which saw the sizzling oil burst into a wall of flame
Teash then hurried to the door, still holding the pan - but she let go, sending the pan flying across the room and extinguishing the blaze in the process
She later explained that she had dropped the pan after suffering second-degree burns
In another video, Teash acknowledged that other users had been leaving safety tips in the comment section and wanted to share information she learned herself.
'Obviously, putting water on an oil fire is a huge no. But I also wanted to mention that flour and oil do not mix,' she said.
Flour is combustible and should never be used to put out a cooking fire.
'If you're ever in this situation, cover it with a lid, use a fire extinguisher, fire blanket...most importantly, don't do what I did,' Teash said.
She also discouraged others from attempting to take a fire outside, as severe burns could result and the fire could spread.
But along with the well-meaning advice came an outpouring of sexist remarks. Teash singled out one comment reading, 'This is why you need a man in the house.'
She alluded that netizens had been making comments about her sexuality and hair color, leaning into the trope of a ditsy blonde.
'Things happen, and people make mistakes,' she said firmly. 'It could literally be anyone.'
