Mike Johnson swears in McCarthy replacement Rep. Vince Fong bringing slim GOP majority up by one
Speaker Mike Johnson swore in Rep. Vince Fong to replace Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday in a boost for House Republicans' razor-thin majority.
Speaker Mike Johnson swore in Rep. Vince Fong to replace Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday in a boost for House Republicans' razor-thin majority.
Fong, 45, beat out local sheriff Mike Boudreaux in a run-off race on May 22. His swearing-in brings the House breakdown to 218 Republicans and 213 Democrats, allowing for just two GOP defections on party-line legislation.
Fong will now serve in Congress for the next seven months and have the incumbent advantage in the November election.
The Bakersfield Assemblyman is a former top aide of McCarthy, who retired in December after being ousted from the speakership, a role he worked his entire career to achieve and held for nine months.
McCarthy was present on the floor for Fong's swearing-in and was applauded by most Republicans - except his Freedom Caucus detractors as Fong thanked him.

Dr. Anthony Fauci made several stunning admissions during testimony before Congress Monday as Republicans sought to pin blame on him for pandemic-era blunders.
The hearing was a culmination of a years-long effort to find the origins of COVID, identify missteps during the response to the pandemic and get closure on the policies that restricted normal American life at the time.
But answers to those questions were hard to come by in the 3.5 hour hearing before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Lawmakers yelled at each other and Dr. Fauci and tempers flared as Congress revisited one of the darker periods in recent memory.

From Nikki Schwab, Senior Political Reporter for DailyMail.com
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre mainly dodged questions about Hunter Biden's trial when pressed by reporters on Monday night.
When asked if it would impact the president's ability to do his job, she said:
Absolutely not. Obviously the president is the president of the United States and he always put the American people first and is capable of doing his job.
I will point you to the president's statement, I know many of you have seen the statement but I will just read what the president put out, what we put out, on behalf of the president today.
She was then asked if Biden followed the coverage, to which she said: 'I appreciate the question. And I know it's going to be asked a million different ways, I just don't have anything to share. All I have to share with all of you is what we shared this morning is the president's statement.'

Trump had massive money haul in month featuring Stormy Daniels testimony and guilty verdict
As Hunter Biden's historic gun case kicked off in Wilmington, Delaware Monday, all eyes will be on the Trump-appointed judge handling the case: Judge Maryellen Noreika
The Trump-appointed judge in Hunter Biden's gun case recently doubled the sentence of a man who pleaded guilty for a similar firearms infraction.
Defendant Zhi Dong was sentenced to one year in prison by Judge Maryellen Noreika after prosecutors recommended he only serve six months.
Dong used a Delaware license and a Delaware address to buy 29 guns and transported them with another individual to California.
Since Dong was a first-time offender, pleaded guilty and was a lawful gun owner, prosecutors recommended the six month punishment.
Dong, they said, was also not the 'brains of this operation.'
Noreika thought otherwise and gave him jail time for a full year.

The President confirmed that the United States, together with Egypt and Qatar, would work to ensure the full implementation of the entire agreement.
He urged Amir Tamim to use all appropriate measures to secure Hamas’ acceptance of the deal and affirmed that Hamas is now the only obstacle to a complete ceasefire and relief for the people of Gaza. Kevin McCarthy defends Larry Hogan after Maryland GOP Senate candidate called for Americans to 'respect the verdict' ahead of Trump conviction
Kevin McCarthy defended Maryland's GOP Senate candidate, Gov. Larry Hogan, after he called for Americans to respect the judicial process after the Trump conviction. He argued Hogan, a centrist, is the only Republican who could win in blue Maryland.
'If you want to win back the Senate, you want to be on offense, expand the playing field. If Larry Hogan was not running in Maryland, it wouldn't even be a contest. You want Democrats to have to spend money. I think people should take a deep breath, actually reread what Larry hogan said in the process. It wasn't an anti-Trump comment,' he said on Fox News on Monday
'He's proven he can win in that state, a two-term governor. He's a conservative in the process, and if you want to win the Senate, you've gotta be playing in all these things.'
It came after RNC co-chair Lara Trump said over the weekend that Hogan 'doesn’t deserve the respect of anyone in the Republican Party.' Trump campaign advisor Chris LaCivita told Hogan on X he 'ended [his] campaign' with his comments.
