Walgreens joins price war as it slashes cost of 1,300 items - after cuts from Walmart, Target, Aldi and Amazon

Walgreens is the latest retailer to fire shots in a growing price war in America - cutting the cost of 1,300 items.

Prices have been immediately lowered on everything from snacks to toiletries and even Squishmallows. 

Rivals Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Aldi have all reduced prices recently too.

At Walgreens, a jar of One A Day gummy vitamins is now $11.99, down from $13.49, and a bag of sour cream and onion potato chips from its Nice! brand now $1.99, from $2.79. 

A 16-inch Squishmallow plush is down from $24.99 to $20.

Both branded and own-label products have been cut in stores and online. 

'Walgreens understands our customers are under financial strain and struggle to purchase everyday essentials.' said Tracey Brown, Walgreens chief customer officer.

Amazon Fresh, the grovery arm of the online giant, said on May 24 it is cutting prices of 4,000 items by up to 30 percent. 

The reductions rotate each week across drinks, dairy, frozen food, meat and seafood. 

Target said on May 20, it s cutting the prices of 5,000 items. across dozens of national brands as well as its own brands. One pizza brand will go down 20 cents and bagels down 40 cents.  

Meanwhile, Aldi said in April it would pass along $100 million in savings through Labor Day by further dropping its everyday low prices on more than 250 items.

Walmart was the first to lower prices with its 'rollback' program earlier this year. It trimmed the prices on 7,000 items, which is credited with helping it boost sales

Meanwhile, Walmart customers wanting to claim a share of a $45 million class-action must act now - the deadline to claim is Wednesday.

Anyone who has bought certain bags of citrus fruit or packs of meat. between October 2018 and January this year is in line for up to $500 to make up for overpaying.
