California Democrat Maxine Waters raised eyebrows on Sunday with claims about supporters of former President Donald Trump after he was found guilty by a New York jury in his 'hush money' trial.
Waters appeared on MSNBC with host Jonathan Capehart warning that the former president and supporters pose a dangerous threat to the country.
'I'm worried that he's so divisive and that he's talking about retribution, and they're talking about revenge and I think that that's dangerous. He's even mentioned civil war at one point, talked about there would be bloodshed,' Waters said.
She said she would raise her concerns with federal law enforcement, in order to be prepared for the violence unleashed by Trump and his supporters if he did not win the election in November.
'I am going to spend some time with the criminal justice system, with the justice system, asking them, tell us what's going on with the domestic terrorists,' she said. 'Are they preparing a civil war against us? Should we be concerned about our safety?'
Representative and chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) warns that 'domestic terrorists' supporting former President Donald Trump may start a civil war if he loses in November
Waters said Trump was a criminal accusing him of someone 'who disrespects the Constitution and democracy,' arguing that he and the 'domestic terrorists' that supported him already tried to take over the government on January 6.
'This is not good for this country. But he does not care about democracy, he does not care about the Constitution of the United States,' she said. 'He's in love with Putin and Russia and Kim Jong-un and North Korea.'
Waters' comments echoed earlier concerns she shared in May about Trump supporters security training for a civil war if the election did not go in his favor.

A few dozen supporters of former U.S. president Donald Trump are gathering with signs, flags, custom-painted trucks, and amplified music across the street from Trump Tower in New York
'I wanna know about all of those right-wing organizations that he's connected with who are training up in the hills somewhere, and targeting, what communities they are going to attack,' she said on MSNBC.
Waters has long been a proponent of charging Trump in court, predicting that porn star Stormy Daniels was the path to get there.
On Thursday, Waters celebrated the verdict on social media.
'Hallelujah!!! My predictions came true!' she wrote. 'I predicted three years ago at a speech with the Human Rights Campaign that Stormy Daniels would be the one to get Trump, my faith in the criminal justice system has been strengthened!'
