A California man was left stunned after a bear sauntered into his kitchen while he was doing the dishes.

Jason Wightman from Sierra Madre didn't know how to react when the 300-pound animal walked through an open door and into his home at 5:30pm on Tuesday.

He shared a nail-biting five-minute-long video of the interaction to Facebook, where it amassed more than 2,000 views.

Alongside a shocked emoji, he penned: 'I was doing my dishes and happened to look over and well this happened'.

In the clip, the animal cautiously pokes it's head around the corner and looks at the homeowner, before stepping closer.

'Hello, are you nice?,' Jason asks nervously, 'You're in my house, get out of my house'.

He continued: 'Mr. Bear, I'm warning you - get out of my house. Bear, bear, bear, be nice. You're licking your lips.'

Trying and failing to get the animal to leave his home, he asked the bear: 'Do you want me to spray you with water?'

Wightman went on to spray the bear as it tried to get closer again and it backed off and ran outside.

Following it, he realised there were in fact two of them who were now in his garden.

'Alright, who else you got here? Is it just two of you? I see you over there,' he said while filming them.

'I'm not gonna hurt you guys, I just want you to move on. Go how you came out. Go on, I've got nothing here for you' he added, as he kept talking to the animals.

Seemingly getting irritated, one of the bears begins walking quickly towards the California resident, who quickly backs away and runs back to his house.

The bears clearly didn't want to leave, even with the man opening a door for them and continuing to make noises to scare them away. Eventually though, they climbed over a fence and left the property.

Speaking to CBS News about the incident, Wightman said: 'I don't even remember what I was saying. It was happening so fast. There was a bear in my kitchen.'

According to the outlet, Sierra Madre recorded more than 370 bear sightings last year alone, with 70 of the animals entering people's homes.

Now, halfway through this year, there have already been more than 100 spotted - hree inside homes, according to Deputy City Manager Laura Aguilar.

The video comes just as it was confirmed that a 71-year-old California woman who was mysteriously found dead at home was mauled to death by a black bear, in the first ever fatal attack of its kind.

Patrice Miller was found dead last November in her home in Downieville, a tiny town in the Sierra Nevada, two hours northeast of the state capital, Sacramento.

Sierra County sheriff’s deputies were checking on the welfare of a resident who hadn’t been seen for a few days when they found a broken door and bear scat on the porch.

Officers forced their way into the home and discovered her dead body inside, noting the house had been ransacked, with signs that led them to believe a bear had entered the property.

'It appeared that the bear had probably been there several days and had been feeding on the remains,' Sheriff Mike Fisher told KCRA.

It was initially believed that Miller died before the arrival of the bear and that it may have been drawn by the scent.

Meanwhile, there were many reports from concerned citizens about a bear repeatedly returning to the house. A state depredation permit was issued and a bear was trapped on the property and euthanized, according to Fisher.

An autopsy then revealed Miller passed away 'due to a bear mauling or a swipe and a bite to the neck area.'

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that it was the first record of a deadly black bear attack on a human in the state.
